"The Development of State Legislation Concerning the Free Negro is an odd but very important and extremely useful book. Written nearly a century ago it is an example of the best of the Ph.D. dissertations of the first generation of doctoral students in the social sciences. It lacks any great theoretical framework or much analysis but it is chock full of information facts tables and excerpts from laws. It is also useful because many of the laws set out in this volume are not easily found otherwise. Despite the massive growth of material on the internet or in machine readable form early laws are still hard to locate. This important study written during the First World War was one of the first to propose a league of nations. Nippold a German jurist who lived in Switzerland argues that the First World War created a need for a radical reinterpretation of the law of war. Modern war cannot be given the character of a legal institution because it is really a negation of law. War is not an element of international law he concludes; it is self-help on the part of the aggressor nation. In his International Law C.G. Fenwick stated that this book would be an essential addition to a working library of international law. Published until 1939 they provide a rich new primary source record for scholars of the Constitutional Convention. These notes are of value not only for their unique perspective on the principals involved but for the issues regarding the states relationships he documented. Only in Lansing's notes do we find a report of two significant questions regarding states' rights and sovereignty an explanation of Charles Pinckney's plan for the Senate an exceptionally careful presentation of Hamilton's speeches on individual and states' rights and an explanation of the final vote on the New Jersey plan. unknown books

The German Criminal Code Reichsstrafgesetzbuch was ratified by the newly-formed German Empire on 16 April 1871. It is a remarkable work of synthesis drawn mostly from the Constitutio Criminalis Carolina 1532 the Code Napoleon 1804 Feuerbach's Bavarian Criminal Code 1813 and the Prussian Penal Code 1851 which was influenced by the Code Napoleon. Its value lay not just in its establishment of uniform federal law but as Drage notes in his excellent commentary in its catholicity of historical and contemporary sources. Drawing on the idea of German unity underscored in this case by the consensus-forming might of Prussian arms the criminal code remained in force despite various efforts at reform until the triumph of National Socialism. unknown books

Although Maitland's classic History of English Law ends at Henry III's death until now no one has explained in clear modern language the transformative events that followed. After Edward I became king Chief Justice Bereford took charge of the legal system and created law in accord with his own sense of justice. The book puts his innovations into the context of contemporary American and English law. "It is a staple of popular fiction - The Da Vinci Code is a prominent recent example - for a scholar after inspired and painstaking work to reveal hidden mysteries encoded in ancient manuscripts that alter our understanding of ourselves and our civilization. Remarkably the legal scholar Thomas Lund has in real life done just that. Here after hundreds of years is a readable brilliant and deep study of the sources of the basic principles of the Anglo-American Legal System still in use today - the medieval Year Books - until now utterly inaccessible except to a few specialists in the most arcane legal history.
