A costume party attended by the locally famous identified only by first and last initials. An amusing poem "To the Queen" is appended which concerns a further description of those hosting and those attending the ball. "Not among the Turks alone are women sold / Parties are here the markets for dears / And careful mothers act as auctioneers." Munsell wrote of this piece in his annotated copy: "This was written by Mip Gibbons to describe a fancy dress ball given at the expense of Henry Yates who occupied the Kane Mansion on South Pearl Street. It was conceived and arranged by E. R. Satterlee who had married a niece of Mr. Yates and had a genius for the fine arts . Mr. Satterlee was a wine and tea merchant in State Street succeeding his father who was successor of Mancius & Le Breton - famous in their day. Mr. S. moved to New York and engaged in insurance at 161 Broadway. This ball was the most famous affair that had ever been got up in Albany. In this work no words are divided at the ends of the lines. I set the type with my own hands at a time when I could do and enjoy such recreation - for type setting was always a recreation. New. $39.95 Lizzie Borden 1860-1927 was tried and acquitted for the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River Massachusetts. Speculation continues today about the sensational case that produced a famous nursery rhyme. Although she was acquitted no one else was ever charged with the murders and Borden lived out her life in Fall River. Compiled immediately after Borden's sensational trial the author aims to provide "a connected story of the whole case commencing with the day of the tragedy and ending with the day that Miss Borden was set free." He touches on such topics as the discovery of the murders the adjournment of the preliminary hearing and some the many theories that were advanced before any arrests were made. The book is handsomely illustrated with photos and line illustrations of the deceased the accused the jury and others. Edwin H. Porter 1864-1904 was the Police Reporter for the Fall River Daily Globe and a correspondent for the Boston Herald. Accounts that he was paid to leave town and disappear after the book was published are incorrect. Especially significant because it had a direct influence on legislation this "Bible of the Reformers" is a model of investigatory pamphleteering in the cause of representative democracy. The long struggle to transform Great Britain into a modern state was effected primarily through the gradual expansion of the electorate which was accomplished though the Reform Acts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In the earlier era as the growth of industry shook the traditional agrarian economy dominated by the landholding aristocracy the accompanying campaign to transform government by weaning power from traditional loci was conducted through a mass of books pamphlets and other printed matter. The Extraordinary Black Book which went through several editions between 1820 and 1832 was the most important of these. As the editor explained: "Government has been a corporation and had the same interests and the same principles of action as monopolists. It has been supported by other corporations; the Church has been one the Agriculturists another the Boroughs a third the East-India Company a fourth and the Bank of England a fifth: all these and interests like these constituted the citadel and out-works of its strength and the first object of each has been to shun investigation.
