Gregory "Ligor" Aristarchis also known as Aristarchi Bey, was an Ottoman diplomat of Phanariote Greek ethnicity, compiler of a corpus of Ottoman legislation. Originally a provincial jurist, he became the director of foreign correspondence of Crete beginning in 1861, and then from 1867 the Smyrna (Izmir) directeur politique ("political director") and vice-governor. He served as Ottoman Minister in Washington from 1873 to 1883 with Alexandros Mavrogenis. The Ottoman government dismissed him from his post. Sinan Kuneralp, the author of "Ottoman Diplomatic and Consular Personnel in the United States of America, 1867-1917," argued that his relationship with Midhat Pasha was the "more likely" reason why he was fired, while the official accusation was that Aristarchis misused money from a weapons deal. After 1883 he lived in Paris where he worked as an advisor to Alfred Nobel. After the fall of Abdul Hamid II, he served as an Ottoman envoy to the Netherlands, where he died. He composed one of the first collections of the Ottoman law in 7 volumes in the French language: "egislation ottomane, ou Recueil des lois, reglements, ordonnances, traités, capitulations et autres documents officiels de l'Émpire Ottoman", Constantinople: Imprimerie, Frères Nicolaides.

Konstantinos Mousouros, also known as Kostaki Musurus Pasha, was an Ottoman Greek diplomatic official of the Ottoman Empire who served as ambassador to Greece, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He was born in 1807 in Constantinople (Istanbul) to a distinguished Phanariote family. His brother, Pavlos Mousouros, also became a diplomat. Mousouros became the first ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1840, a position he kept until 1848. In 1847-48 he was a central figure in the events known as Mousourika (??????????), which led to his temporary recall and the breakdown of relations between the two states. On his return to Athens he survived an assassination attempt, leading to his transfer to Vienna. In 1850 he took up the post of Ottoman ambassador to the Great Britain and Ireland, which he kept for 35 consecutive years, until his retirement in 1885. During the same period, he also served as ambassador to the Netherlands (1861-77) and Belgium (1861-75). In 1876-78, he was ex officio a member of the short-lived Senate of the Ottoman Empire. First and only edition of this extremely rare pamphlet includes the chapters of 'From Marseilles to Gabon' and 'From Libreville to Banguela' of Trivier's expeditions in Africa. First chapter includes Trivier's Mozambique travel by ship over the Strait of Gibraltar. In this chapter, Trivier described the purpose of his voyage as "After returning to France from my last trip in January 1890, I declared that many more places should be seen. I have written many articles about the necessity of looking for new ways to eliminate the fears and worries caused by McKinley tariffs that are harmed everywhere. As a nice result of this, the Paris City Council and the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce decided not to be dispatched to the hometown of Africans with an amount of money close to 11,000 francs.". In the second chapter, he describes Congo and other parts of Central Africa. French explorer Elisee Trivier followed in the footsteps of Scottish missionary David Livingstone in his attempt to explore the interior of Africa. The torch of the Empire: Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson and the tableau general of the Ottoman Empire in the eighteenth century.= Imparatorlugun mesalesi: XVIII. yüzyilda Osmanli Imparatorlugu'nun genel görünümü ve Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson. Articles by Carter Vaughn Findley, Günsel Renda, Philip Mansel, Veniamin Ciobanu, Kemal Beydilli, Abdeljelil Temimi, Rachida Tlili Sellaouti, Folke Ludwigs Sture Theolin. The Torch of the Ottoman Empire presents the life and work of a truly remarkable person, Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson, and through him, the Ottoman Empire of the late eighteenth century. In revolutionary Paris d'Ohsson published in 1789 what is maybe the best description of the social history of the Ottoman Empire, Tableau General de I'Empire Othoman. D'Ohsson's book was extravagantly illustrated with the help of the best artists in Constantinople working for Abdulhamid I and Selim III. The most renowned artists of pre-revolutionary France then executed the gravures in Paris. Some motifs, reproduced also in this present book, still remain quite unique. Through these engravings, an intimate reality is revealed to us, bringing us very close to a universe long since vanished. A very heavy volume. The Torch of the Empire presents the life and work of a truly remarkable person, Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson, and through him, the Ottoman Empire of the late eighteenth century. Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson was a dragoman, an interpreter, at the Swedish Legation in Constantinople from around 1760. Although d'Ohsson was a Sultan's subject of French-Armenian origin, Sweden's King Gustav III made him a Swedish nobleman and trusted him to be his ambassador to the Sublime Porte. Mouradgea d'Ohsson thus performed an extraordinary journey, not only through the social classes of Ottoman society, but between civilizations. With outstanding scholars this book escorts us on a journey through the centuries to meet d'Ohsson and share his perspective on the Ottoman Empire and on European diplomacy of his time.

'Xénophane', 4:518), à propos de la partialité des historiens : "J’ai lu un livre italien qui a pour titre ‘Monarchia del nostro signor Giesu Christo’ (…). Cornelius Loos in the Ottoman world: Drawings for the King of Sweden, 1710-1711. [with] Panoramas & map [book]. Prep. by Lâle Uluç, David Jones, Klas Kronberg, Ersu Pekin. 2 volumes. [BOXED]. Cornelius Loos was one of the young military officers who followed Karl XII to the Ottoman Empire in 1709. From the royal headquarters in what is at present the republic of Moldova, Loos was sent to Istanbul on the King's orders in 1710. From there his journey was pursued by boat over the Mediterranean to Egypt and he returned by land through Jerusalem, Damascus, Aleppo, Konya and Izmir. Loos' mission was to make drawings of the "rarities and monuments" that he would encounter on his journey. Out of the drawings that have survived until today, one is from Palmyra, two from Rhodes and Bodrum and around forty aquarelle tush drawings from Istanbul. It is possible that part of the original drawings were destroyed in the "Skirmish at Bender" in 1713, while other works, due to various reasons, disappeared on their way to Sweden. The conserved drawings are kept at the Swedish National Museum and were exhibited there in 1985. (See catalogue titled "Cornelius Loos. Teckningar från en expedition till Främre Orienten 1719-1711", Stockholm, Nationalmuseum, 1985). The drawings represent a unique record of the urban landscape and the monuments in Istanbul in the early 18th century. The collection includes three great panoramas of the city seen from the Topkapi palace to the upper part of the Golden Horn. To the Loos paintings can be added the great Mecca painting brought to Sweden by Mikael Eneman and kept in the Uppsala University Library, and a small group of oil paintings brought back by Loos' travel companion Conrad Sparre, which are also kept in the art collection of Uppsala University. In addition there are travel accounts and correspondence from these journeys. (From the 'SRII's official site, Karin Adahl's project). "In January 1710 the Swedish king Charles XII, in exile in the Ottoman Empire, sent three of his officers on a journey from the royal camp near Bender in Moldova to travel to Constantinople and from there along the Eastern Mediterranean to Egypt. Their mission was 'to view the there existing rarities and monuments, to draw and to measure'. Cornelius Loos, one of the young officers, returned to his king in 1711 with more than 250 drawings. Only forty-nine, kept under the king's bed, survived a skirmish in the camp in 1713, the so called 'kalabalik' at Bender. King Charles had a vision to publish an encyclopaedic work about the Near East, a dream that was lost in the fire in the camp. The drawings were brought to Sweden when the king returned from the Ottoman Empire in 1714. He died in battle in Norway in 1718. Loos' drawings are unique documents of Constanttinople in the early 18th century, with large scale, detailed panoramas, important prospects of the interior of the Hagia Sophia and views from the Ottoman city. A big map is accompanied by minor drawings from the Black Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean and Egypt, as well as a spectacular set of water-colours of head dresses from the Ottoman world. The Loos collection of drawings is today kept in the National Museum in Stockholm.". Texts by Göran Baarnhielm, Ulla Ehrensvard, Nurhan Atasoy, Günsel Renda, Bo Lundstörm
