8vo, riegato in sovracoperta, 1016pp. Di Concetto Marchesi (1878-1957) può dirsi che ebbe due vite: quella vera, di uomo di genio, con la sua grandezza, e le sue debolezze e zone d'ombra, il suo fiuto politico, il suo pessimistico individualismo; e quella, artificiosa, del mito postumo. L'esperienza che segnò tutta la sua vicenda fu la resa, e poi adesione, al fascismo della maggioranza degli italiani. Marchesi convisse col fascismo nella difficile posizione dell'oppositore 'dormiente', unico esponente dell'alta cultura italiana legato al disciolto ma mai annientato Partito comunista. Intanto maturava in lui l'opzione, verso cui si orientava, negli stessi anni, anche Antonio Gramsci, per il «cesarismo progressivo», incarnato, ai suoi occhi, dal potere staliniano. La costante riscrittura di capitoli chiave della sua Storia della letteratura latina (Gaio Gracco, Sallustio, Cesare, Tacito) fu lo specchio di tale cammino. Rettore a Padova dopo l'8 settembre 1943, giocò una partita spericolata e controversa, ma alla lunga insostenibile. Costretto alla fuga, dall'esilio in Svizzera, crocevia dei servizi segreti delle potenze in guerra, divenne il perno della rete che riforniva di armi i partigiani. Nel riflusso del dopoguerra, presto vide che il fascismo non era affatto morto. Ma nel «terribile 1956», pur sferzando apostati e fuggiaschi, intuì la crisi profonda del movimento comunista.
