Timothy Johnston draws on newspapers, films, plays, and popular music in order to examine the changing nature of Soviet identity in this era. He pays particular attention to the evolution of Britain and America from wartime allies to Cold War enemies. Being Soviet then explores how ordinary citizens related to this official version of Soviet identity. It examines that question via the rumours, jazz music, hairstyles, jokes, anti-war campaigns, and sexual relationships of the time. Johnston argues that these 'everyday' activities defined Soviet identity for the man on the street in the USSR. At the heart of the book is a sustained critique of the current emphasis on 'supporters' or 'resistors' of the regime. Johnston suggests that the shadow of Foucault looms too large in the history of Stalinism. The relationship between Soviet citizens and Soviet power was defined by the subtle tactics of everyday living. For many, life was not defined by 'belief' or 'unbelief' but rather the constant struggle to stay fed, informed, and entertained. This more nuanced approach offers a rich and textured image of what it meant to be Soviet in Stalin's least years.
br. Il 25 aprile chi va in piazza a cantare "Bella ciao" è convinto che tutti i partigiani abbiano combattuto per la libertà dell'Italia. È un'immagine suggestiva della Resistenza, ma non corrisponde alla verità. I comunisti si battevano, e morivano, per un obiettivo inaccettabile da chi lottava per la democrazia. La guerra contro tedeschi e fascisti era soltanto il primo tempo di una rivoluzione destinata a fondare una dittatura popolare, agli ordini dell'Unione Sovietica. Giampaolo Pansa racconta come i capi delle Garibaldi abbiano tentato di realizzare questo disegno autoritario e in che modo si siano comportati nei confronti di chi non voleva sottomettersi alla loro egemonia. Quando si sparava, dire di no ai comunisti richiedeva molto coraggio. Il Pci era il protagonista assoluto della Resistenza. Più della metà delle formazioni rispondeva soltanto a comandanti e commissari politici rossi. "Bella ciao" ricostruisce il cammino delle bande guidate da Luigi Longo e da Pietro Secchia sin dall'agosto 1943, con la partenza dal confino di Ventotene. Poi le prime azioni terroristiche dei Gap, l'omicidio di capi partigiani ostili al Pci, il cinismo nel provocare le rappresaglie nemiche, ritenute il passaggio obbligato per allargare l'incendio della guerra civile. La controstoria di Pansa svela il lato oscuro della Resistenza e la spietatezza di uno scontro tutto interno al fronte antifascista. E riporta alla luce vicende, personaggi e delitti sempre ignorati.

Davis 1949. <br /><br /> Single page folded once to create a 4-page brochure measuring 11 x 8 1/2 inches 280 x 215 mm when folded.<br /><br />Illustrated brochure featuring an autobiographical statement by Benjamin J. Davis a Black Communist who was running for re-election to the New York City Council. The statement was based on his testimony in the 1949 trial against him and 10 other Communist leaders who had been charged with conspiring to overthrow the government.<br /><br />Davis recounts his childhood in Georgia attending college at Morehouse and Amherst and graduating from Harvard Law School. He talks about some of the cases he worked on as a lawyer and ends with a plea for readers to sign petitions to secure a place for him on the ballot. The brochure lists his 11-point program which includes ending police brutality in Harlem and restoring the five-cent fare. <br /><br />We find no institutional holdings of this brochure in OCLC and none in commerce June 2021. <b>RARE</b>. <br /><br />CONDITION: A bit of handling wear and soiling. Anche oggi che il "socialismo reale" è naufragato e che la storia ha mandato in frantumi il sogno di Marx, il fallimento delle sue profezie non intacca l'esattezza della denunce da lui formulate, e la sua critica radicale del capitalismo rappresenta ancora lo strumentario concettuale più "forte"per criticare la società esistente e le contraddizioni che la permeano. Il progetto marxista continua a essere la più seducente promessa di felicità di cui la filosofia moderna sia stata capace.
