197210606Athens: ΑÎΑΞΙΜΑÎΔΡΟΣ Anaximandros Publications 1972. Four Books in Six Volumes Vol. I: 104pp. 1-480pp.; Vol. IA: 481-848pp. 214pp. of notes tables and indexes; Vol. II: 30pp. 1-559pp. 24pp. of interpretive notes; VIII: 32pp. 1-608pp.; VIIIA: 609-1121pp. 32pp. of Engels's Epilogue 95pp. of notes tables and indexes; VΔ: 36pp. 1-476pp. 68pp. of interpretive notes. The first two volumes comprising The Process of Capital Production the third volume constituting The Process of Capital Circulation volumes four and five being The Entire Process of Capitalist Production and the final volume constituting Theories about Surplus Value. Text in Greek. Bound in black leather with gilt titling and blindstamped portrait of Marx to front and spine. Crinkling to pastedowns with toning to free endpapers. Scattered foxing and soiling to text block edges mostly confined to top edge. Internally clean. Near Fine in a beautiful contemporary binding.

The first attempts though unsuccessful to translate Das Kapital into Greek occurred during the interwar period. The first complete Greek translation of Das Kapital complemented later with Theories about Surplus Value was produced by the lawyer Yiannis D. Skouriotis and published at his own expense in a series of volumes beginning in 1954. His translation was based primarily on a German edition published in East Berlin in 1953 itself a reprint of the 1932 edition issued by the Marx-Engels-Lenin Institute in Moscow. Although Skouriotis's work is generally regarded as a high‑quality translation its linguistic style renders it difficult for contemporary readers because of his attempt to combine conceptual clarity with the 'demotic' or non-standardized vernacular form of Greek. As a result while Skouriotis accomplished a monumental task his edition did not remain in print for long leaving the later 'Mavromatis translation' as the primary translation in Greek.

The history of communism in modern Greece is quite complex as is establishing publication history for the Skouriotis translation. Most sources identify his translation as being independently published or published at his own expense without acknowledging any specific publishing house that may have undertaken the actual publication and distribution of the text. The numerous booksellers we consulted in Greece corroborated that the book's publication history is indeed ambiguous. Thus we cannot state with certainty that this is the first edition in Greek; however our research suggests that it is at minimum an early edition. ΑÎΑΞΙΜΑÎΔΡΟΣ [Anaximandros Publications] unknown

1897105014London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co 1897. First edition in English of this collection of letters and articles by Karl Marx dealing with the events of the Crimean War. Octavo original cloth with gilt titles to the spine folding map in color at rear. Edited by Eleanor Marx Aveling and Edward Aveling. In very good condition with light rubbing. A very sharp example. Marx's theories about society economics and politics--collectively understood as Marxism--hold that human societies develop through class struggle. In capitalism this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes known as the bourgeoisie that control the means of production and working classes known as the proletariat that enable these means by selling their labor power in return for wages. Employing a critical approach known as historical materialism Marx predicted that like previous socioeconomic systems capitalism produced internal tensions which would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system: socialism. For Marx class antagonisms under capitalism owing in part to its instability and crisis-prone nature would eventuate the working class' development of class consciousness leading to their conquest of political power and eventually the establishment of a classless communist society constituted by a free association of producers. Marx actively fought for its implementation arguing that the working class should carry out organised revolutionary action to topple capitalism and bring about socio-economic emancipation. 1958W2814Palm Springs California: Unpublished 1958. Vernacular photograph of Harpo Marx that is signed by Harpo on the verso with a humorous personal note to "Mildred." "Mildred" was Mildred Dilling the world-famous harpist who was Harpo's harp teacher and life-long friend. The text of the note reads: "Mildred I tried this with the harp--it did not work for all I could play was the fountain. It's 110 here today. Minnie would be willing to take up harp if you could saddle it on her horse's back--what about a week of one-nighters harping" Harpo" "Minnie" was the adopted daughter of Harpo and his wife actress Susan Fleming. It is likely that the photo was taken by Susan and that Harpo was in the swimming pool at their home "Rancho Mirage" in Palm Springs. Provenance: from the estate of Mildred Dilling--obviously a gift from Harpo to Mildred. The photograph is in virtually fine condition: clean bright and free of wrinkles. Harp's note on the verso is bright and unfaded. Note: we have found no evidence that this photograph has ever been published; it may well be the only copy extant. SIGNED. Original. Single Sheet. Fine. 3 1/2 Inches By 3 1/2 Inches. Manuscript. Unpublished

For over four decades Leo Marx's work has focused on the relationship between technology and culture in 19th- and 20th-century America. His research helped to define--and continues to give depth to--the area of American studies concerned with the links between scientific and technological advances and the way society and culture both determine these links. The Machine in the Garden fully examines the difference between the "pastoral" and "progressive" ideals which characterized early 19th-century American culture and which ultimately evolved into the basis for much of the environmental and nuclear debates of contemporary society.
