193388360Chicago: Charles H. Kerr & Company 1933. Reprint. Three Volumes. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's burgundy cloth titled in gilt to spines. 869pp.; 618pp.; 1048pp. Some light wear and shallow fraying to heads of spines gilt bright bindings strong with some mild scuffing in places; internally clean and fresh although not printed on the best paper stock the stand out peculiarity of this set is that Volume I has been bound upside down in its binding not something we have experienced before with this set. A very good clean set of an important work with a peculair binder's error.

First printings of this work would constitute the first complete translation in English of Marx's Capital. Kerr used the English translation of the Third German edition by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling with subsequent revision and translation by the highly prolific Ernest Untermann who in 1906-1907 seemed to be working on several key translations simultaneously. Volume II bears the date of 1933 to the title page whilst the other two volumes are blank denoting that they are reprints. Up to a certain point Kerr dated the reprints of this work on the title page but no degree of certainty can be assured regarding their specific system. Judging from the uniformity of cloth and typeface etc. it would seem fair to place these reprinted dateless volumes around the same period as the dated Volume II. A handsome reprinted set of one of the key texts of the late 19th Century and one of the most important works in Western history. Charles H. Kerr & Company unknown
