10596Chicago: Charles H. Kerr & Company Co-Operative Communist Manifesto undated ca. early 1910s No Compromise dated 1911. 17x11cm: 2 3-64 1 2-64pp. Early reprint. Maroon cloth-covered boards with titling stamped in black on front cover and spine publisher's device blindstamped on front cover and publisher's monogram in black on spine. Moderate soiling spotting and wear to cloth with some exposure and fraying at corners and spine ends. Spine a tad darkened. Hinges tender. Previous owner names in ink on front free endpaper along with some interesting communist-themed sketches also in ink. One sketch is of a star with the word RED inside another of a hammer and sickle and another very peculiar sketch perhaps some symbolic communist anal sex. A few pages with smoothed out creases at corners from having been previously dog-eared. Very Good.

Marx and Engels first published their manifesto of the "Communist League" in German in 1848. The first translation into English was completed by Miss Helen Macfarlane in London 1850. During the late 19th century the text had been translated into numerous languages some translations better than others including French Russian Danish and Spanish. The present text was translated by Samuel Moore in 1888 with assistance by Engels who also provides a few explanatory notes. Moore's translation is considered the definitive version used in English-speaking countries. American radical publisher Charles Kerr's Manifesto of the Communist Party follows this translation. OCLC cites 1902 as the earliest printing of this work by Kerr although the earliest copy we could physically locate has a date of 1906 on the title page. It seems that copies including reprints produced pre-1930s are quite scarce. unknown

1897787J4London: Swan Sonneschein & Co. 1897. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. A first edition copy of this important work on the Crimean War by Karl Marx. An uncommon work. A collection of letters articles written from 1853 to 1856 by Karl Marx during the Crimean War concerning the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and Russian imperialism towards Turkey. The Crimean War was a military conflict fought from October 1853 to February 1856 in which Russia lost to an alliance of France the Ottoman Empire the United Kingdom and Sardinia. The immediate cause of the war involved the rights of Christian minorities in Palestine which was part of the Ottoman Empire. According to Karl Marx's writings around the Crimean War the main factor of the Eastern Question was Russian imperialism towards Turkey - with Turkey being a barrier that would protect the rest of Europe and thus England's interests laid with the Ottoman Empire during the Crimean War. Including an introduction by Eleanor Marx Aveling and Edward Aveling. Also including two folding maps one to the front and one to the rear. Bound in the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart with a few marks to the front board and slight bumping to head and tail of spine. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown. A small tear in the binding on the spine. Internally binding slightly strained but remaining firm throughout. Internally slight discolouration to the front and rear pastedown and front and rear free-endpapers. Pages bright and clean. Very Good Swan Sonneschein & Co. hardcover
