Al tempo stesso, fin dagli esordi, pesantemente condizionati dall'influenza dell'Unione Sovietica di Stalin, lo sviluppo del comunismo cinese fu costretto a pagare un pesante dazio a spinte capaci di contrassegnarne la futura evoluzione e che, analizzate nella situazione odierna, contribuiscono a spiegare la degenerazione di ciò che appare difficile descrivere ancora nei termini di uno «stato operaio». Questi due volumi ricostruiscono in maniera sistematica la teoria politica di Marx rintracciando, contrariamente alle interpretazioni più diffuse, la profonda vena politica che attraversa e sorregge l'intero programma scientifico marxiano. Grazie a una lettura organica dei testi chiave e alla rivisitazione di scritti solitamente trascurati, come quelli giornalistici, viene ricostituita l'originale dimensione "politologica" di un Marx che, abbandonata ogni metafisica (è impossibile «arrivare al comunismo o al socialismo attraverso la metafisica»), intreccia logica, linguaggi, istituzioni ed economie.
