The syndrome of acute radiation injury to be considered in this article is the term applied to the symptom complex or diseased state which results from exposure of the whole body or a major portion of it to the initial nuclear radiation of an atomic bomb. This term should be clearly distinguished from irradiation sickness which is commonly used to describe the symptom complex resulting from therapeutic irradiation. It should also be distinguished from surface radiation injury. This term is properly applied to injuries of the skin and subcutaneous tissues resulting from x-radiation or from contact or near contact with radioactive material such as fission products and induced radioactivity. Injuries of this type related to atomic energy are due largely to beta-ray-emitting isotopes. Internal radiation injury may result from the selective deposition such as in bone or thyroid of radioactive material that has been inhaled or absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract or wounds. Kimeldorf was a major scientific leader. His book with Ed Hunt entitled "Ionizing radiation: Neural function and behavior" is a thorough description of the physiological and behavioral effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. Charles L. Dunham was born in Evanston Illinois in 1906 and graduated from Yale University A.B. 1929 and the Rush Medical College of the University of Chicago M.D. 1934. He had no contact with nuclear medicine until he joined the Atomic Energy Commission in the<br/> summer of 1949 as Assistant Chief of the Medical Branch. Among his responsibilities at the AEC was its program in cancer research and the program on peaceful uses of the atom in medicine and medical research. When not too preoccupied with fallout and radiation health problems he used his position at the AEC to foster the development of nuclear medicine through the activities of the AEC medical laboratories and clinical facilities at Chicago Oak Ridge Brookhaven Berkeley and Los Angeles and through its nation-wide re<br/> search contract program. The AEC has honored him with its Distinguished Service Medal. Eugene P. Cronkite MD was born in Los Angeles California in 1917. He decided to pursue medicine and was accepted to Stanford University's medical school. After receiving his medical degree Dr. Cronkite joined the Navy and served as a medical corps lieutenant in World War II and as a director of the Naval Medical Research Institute in Maryland. He later left the Navy and began to study the effects of nuclear fallout. Among his subsequent achievements Dr. Cronkite identified links between radiation exposure and cancer developed a new treatment for leukemia and founded the International Society for Experimental Hematology. In 1971 he was elected president of ASH. Dr. Le Roy was a consultant to the Atomic Energy Commission and at one time a member of the Advisory Committee on Medical Uses of Isotopes of the Division of Licensing and Regulation of the Atomic Energy Commission. Shields Warren 26 February 1898 - 1 July 1980 was an American pathologist. He was among the first to study the pathology of radioactive fallout. American Medical Association paperback

190436703London: 5 October 1904. 1904. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink and filling one and a half sides of a cream-colored approximately 8 inch high by 5 inch wide sheet of College of Arms letterhead with the address printed in raised lettering in black at the top. Signed "A. S. Scott-Gatty / Garter". There are remnants of paper & light glue staining to the top edge of the verso where the letter was once tipped onto an album page. Very good. <p>Scott-Gatty writes thanking his correspondent for an invitation and apologizing for being unable to accompany his wife owing to the pressure of work in his new office. "Alas! in my newly acquired elevation I find myself more tied by the leg to my work than I was formerly and having only just returned from my holiday I find a ----- of work to be got through."<p>Sir Alfred Scott Scott-Gatty 1847-1918 began his heraldic career with his appointment to the office of York Herald of Arms in Ordinary. He held two other posts in the early 1900s and in 1904 he was appointed Garter Principal King of Arms holding that office until his death in 1918. In 1911 he was knighted for his services when he was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order KCVO an honor personally bestowed by the King. Scott-Gatty was also a composer. Although an amateur his work was popular and highly regarded in his time. Among his compositions were hundreds of songs two operettas and three musical plays for children with words written by his sister the noted children's author Mrs. Ewing. Since Mr Scott has honoured my work with such interest I feel anxious for opinions which I know have not been lightly formed; You know I have as yet enjoyed no opportunity of conversation with him - I want to bring you a large picture some day next week when you are all at home." 1 side 8vo. 50 Russell Street Hulme Monday no date Shields was an artist illustrator and designer closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites through Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown. unknown
42600Ann née Burrows Writer best known for her connection to Walt Whitman and her Life of Blake offering to "search my studio - which is closed till then - for the missing umbrella - and shall be very glad if it happens to be in my power to return it. Your P. Card was forwarded to me only yesterday to this place where we are staying as the guests of that good lady Mount-Temple whom you met - and who sent us the invitation to avail ourselves of this otherwise tenantless mansion during our brief holiday. What manner of persons Lord & Lady Mount-Temple are you may divine by the picture which hangs over their dining room Mantel piece - which represents themselves & an aged lady - presumably the mother of Lady M-T entertaining at their board the maimed the poor the lame & blind - while through an open window the Master whose command they are obeying looks in upon the holy feast and blesses them in their obedience. An altogether unique subject for rich people to select to have themselves portrayed in as actors - so far as my experience goes. My dear friend Rossetti used always to say of them - 'they are angels'. The place itself is beautiful alike the house without & within and coast & inland hill & vale & my wife is already better for the change - no small joy to me - we write in very kindest regards to Miss Gilchrist & to Herbert. His portrait of his Mother has all the inspiration of affection which marks the portraits that good sons are moved to paint of loved Mothers - and it is an admirable work." 4 sides 8vo. Babbacombe Cliff Torquay headed paper 26th May Mrs Gilchrist is best known for developing a deep attachment to Walt Whitman when she read Leaves of Grass in 1869 and for writing the first great criticism of that work A Woman's Estimate of Walt Whitman; their correspondence was initiated through William Michael Rossetti. When she eventually travelled to Philadelphia in 1876 she met Whitman and they formed a lasting friendship. Her son Herbert Gilchrist 1857-1914 was an artist. William Francis Cowper-Temple acquired the Cliff from Gerald Agnew in 1877 and in its place he built The Babbacombe Cliff. The house was designed by John Ruskin and decorated mainly by Burne-Jones and William Morris. In 1880 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Mount Temple. Previously following the death of his first wife he had married Georgina daughter Admiral John Delap Tollemanche in 1848. The Cowper-Temple's main home was at Broadlands in Hampshire whilst the Babbacombe Cliff was viewed as a holiday retreat until following the death of her husband in 1894 Georgina Baroness Mount-Temple moved permanently to Babbacombe. Whilst living there she was well known as a local philanthropist whose social gatherings and entertaining were second to none. Her guests included William Wilberforce and Oscar Wilde who worked on 'A Woman of No Importance' during his stay. unknown
