184439908Towanda PA 1844. Folio broadside 10-1/8" x 21." Printed in four columns each column separated by a rule. Light to moderate foxing light wear. Good. Signed in type at the bottom by thirty disillusioned local Democrats.

Towanda is the county seat of Bradford County the residence of many of the signers including Judge Edward Herrick the first signer. This evidently unrecorded broadside illustrates the impending split in the Democratic Party along sectional lines over the issue of slavery.
The signers are "steadfast" Democrats distraught that their Party has nominated James K. Polk of Tennessee as its 1844 presidential candidate. Polk known as the "Dark Horse" candidate "was thrust upon the party as the candidate by the intrigues and management of the NULLIFIERS! italics in original. The instructions and pledges of the delegates were disregarded and Mr. V. Buren and the Democratic party betrayed!"
Clay "a statesman of the first order" has always sought to advance the national interest as opposed to parochial concerns. The signers defend his support of protective tariffs and the American System. They applaud his opposition to the annexation of Texas and his warnings that a war with Mexico would result in an expansion of the "odious" system of slavery.
Not in Sabin or American Imprints. 182834348Washington 1828. 4pp. Caption title as issued. Spine reinforced. Signed in type at the end 'MANY.' Dated in type 'Washington March 24 1828.' Toned light wear Good.

A rare examination of shifting political coalitions preceding the 1828 presidential election stimulated by the bill pending in the House of Representatives to increase tariffs on woolens. It's a terrible bill: "The provisions of this bill are such in the opinion of the most intelligent farmers and manufacturers that no rational man can be expected to vote for it." The author warns of a coalition of "Southern members who are against all protection whatever and the Jackson members from Pennsylvania Kentucky and New-York who although they profess to be in favor of protecting the farmers and manufacturers yet vote with their Southern Jackson friends."
The author's dire prediction: "A party is fast forming; of which General JACKSON is to be the HEAD which is to be wholly and systematically opposed to the entire system of protection."
AI 35529 1- DLC. 182834350np 1828. 12pp. Caption title as issued. Stitched untrimmed uncut. Scattered foxing else Very Good.

The author is an Adams man-- evidently Abner Lacock a prominent Pennsylvania politician who signs on page 12 in type-- in the upcoming presidential contest particularly because Adams's "pure and spotless private character" contrasts so sharply with that of his opponent Andrew Jackson whose "entire unfitness" for civil office is evident. His civic activities have been "fruitless of honor." The litany of his infamous duels his abuses of power his uncontrollable anger and temper his well-known violations of civilized norms in Florida and New Orleans is chronicled here.
One John Sullivan of Baltimore attests that General Jackson threatened A. Lacock who appears to be the author of this pamphlet in an extremely unpleasant manner: Jackson "would cut the SCOUNDREL'S EARS OFF."
Not in Wise & Cronin American Imprints Sabin. 185640822New York: New York Tribune 1856. Caption title as issued 16pp. Disbound and wear. Good.

After the Whig Party collapsed under the weight of the Sectional Crisis keen competition emerged among Democrats Republicans and Know-Nothings Americans for the support of its erstwhile members. This pamphlet urges anti-slavery Whigs to vote for the new Republican Party which fielded its first presidential candidate this year.
A close examination of Fillmore's record particularly as Zachary Taylor's vice president reveals that he was no friend of that Whig President. Political expediency has caused him to trim his anti-slavery views: he is now a reliable ally of the South. Although standard bibliographies have failed to include this pamphlet it appears in OCLC under several accession numbers.
FIRST EDITION. Not in Sabin Eberstadt Decker Miles.
