The photo is unevenly trimmed has corner creases and a short tear at the top edge. The image of the children in the photo is unaffected. No writing or identification but the school building was matched against an earlier image for the Rock Island School found at an online history site for Colorado County Texas. Some of the children are barefoot and in overalls most are dressed rather nicely for the event. Paperback

Every leaf of text is interleaves with a blank leaf for notes; in this volume the blank leaves remained blank. Former owner's inscription on front fixed endpaper: Warren G. Light Lebanon Pa. "Warren G. Light" is also written at head of the title page. Stamped on front free endpaper: "Meyer Brubaker & Lewis Law Offices Lebanon Pennsylvania." This was probably Alvin B. Lews esq. a grandson of Warren G. Light esq. of Lebanon Pa. Tipped onto the back free endpaper is a printed leaf with Uniform Rates recommended by the Commercial Law League of America at its 23rd Annual Convention in 1917. With loose: printed slip with from the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania with amendments to rules and the order to establish a Board of Law Examiners all dated 1902; and the carbon from the Court of Common Pleas of Lebanon County replacing rule 24 dated 1961. The Roll of Attorneys lists everyone admitted to practice in Lebanon County from 1813 through July 1895 with dates of death where relevant. An extremely scarce 19th-century Pennsylvania legal work. Very good. 916 pp indexed with 6 folding maps double-page frontispiece with photographic portraits of the city commissioners. Bound in full black leather with all edges gilt stamped Jas. F. Chapman on front board. Chapman was a San Francisco merchant engaged in the shipping trade. Leather scuffed and chipped at spine ends; internals sound and clean. Maps in very good condition. This volume includes interesting detail on all aspects of civil life in San Francisco including reports from the Board of Health Coroner Fire Department Harbor Master Industrial School Park Commissioners Sheriff and Superintendent of Public Streets. But it is of particular importance for the extensive Appendix on the city's water supply which runs to about 110 pages and includes all six maps. The section opens with a statement on "the importance of securing an abundant supply of pure fresh water for the use of the inhabitants of this city and county" notes that although options had previously been explored but no action was ever taken and asserts that "the city should acquire and own water-works and such supplies of water as would meet the present and future wants for the next fifty years not alone for all classes of our population but for cleansing our sewers watering streets and for fire extinguishing purposes." This is followed by the text of the 1874 "Act to Authorize the City and County of San Francisco to Provide and Maintain Public Water Works.and to Condemn and Purchase Private Property for that Purpose. The maps made from surveys conducted under the provisions of that act are: General Map of the Surveys for the San Francisco Water Supply; City Water Supply Map of Blue Lakes Reservoirs; City Water Supply Map of Clear Lake; City Water Supply of Laguna de la Merced; City Water Supply Map of Calaveras Reservoir; and City Water Supply Map of Spring Valley Reservoir. Offers a reward of up to $200 -- $100 for the return of the stolen automobile and $100 for the arrest and conviction of the the thief. The car in question was a dark green 1906 Peerless touring car. The circular which includes a line drawing of a Peerless gives a detailed description of the vehicle and notes that "the automobile will no doubt be re-painted monogram erased and State License substituted" but that "the motor bumber is stamped on the crank case -- this cannot be removed. Alexander who composed the lyrics for the first song featured "Onward! Alma Mater Song". 21pp. Pp. 11-14 contains one of the earliest published pieces by Vladimir Ussachevsky composer and later co-founder of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center becoming one of the major innovators of 20th-century electronic music it was he who proposed the ADSR envelope for electronic sound. Emigrating from Russia in 1930 he began studying music at Pomona College a sister school of Scripps College. In 1951 he was to create the first-ever recording of electronic music.
