The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name on the title page. The book contains a series of newspaper articles regarding the unincorporated town of New Idria and about the mercury mine that was the basis for the town and covers the town from birth to death. "The community was established to support the mine which mainly extracted mercury since cinnabar was abundant in the local rock formations. Mercury mining at the location began in 1854. At one time the New Idria mines were America's second most productive mines with the New Almaden mines in the vicinity of San Jose about 82 miles 132 km northwest being the first. The discovery of mercury ore at New Idria came soon after the discovery of gold in the Sierra foothills which began the California gold rush. At that time mercury was important in extracting gold from gold ore. Before the New Idria and New Almaden Quicksilver Mines the mercury came almost exclusively from Europe." from Wikipedia; 138p. pages; Pictured 3/28/26 . Three Rocks Research unknown

195242627Tokyo: Akane Shobo 1952. Hardcover. 12mo. Color pictorial paper over boards. 113pp. Illustrations one full color map/pictorial endpapers. Very good. Faint edgewear and touch of rubbing. Tight attractive copy of this charming Japanese biography of Abraham Lincoln for juveniles authored by this group that called itself Jidou Bungakusha Kyokai Youth Literary Scholar Association which jointly authored many such titles for children. Since our knowledge of Japanese is minimal -- O.K. nonexistent -- we are unable to determine edition. Most unusual. Interesting that in the U.S. Benjamin Thomas's "Lincoln: A Biography" was published this same year and that interest in Lincoln seems to have been at an all-time high -- even apparently in the Orient. It's also fascinating that despite the illustrator's best efforts to depict in line drawings many scenes from Lincoln's life not only the faces but even some of the settings and landscapes appear vaguely oriental.
