From Wikipedia: "The Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park also just called the Hennepin Canal is an abandoned waterway in northwest Illinois between the Mississippi River at Rock Island and the Illinois River near Hennepin. The entire canal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Opened in 1907 the canal was soon abandoned because of railroad competition. It was resurrected in the late 20th century as a recreational waterway. Its former name was the Illinois and Mississippi Canal. The main canal length is 75.2 miles 121.0 km and its feeder canal is 29.3 miles 47.2 km long. The state park spans five counties Rock Island Bureau Henry Lee and Whiteside and is 104.5 miles 168.2 km long. The Hennepin canal was first conceived in 1834 as a connection between the Illinois and Mississippi River but financial problems in the state delayed many public works projects. Pressure for transportation that was cheaper than rail convinced Congress to authorize preliminary surveys on the project in 1871. Construction began in 1892 and the first boat went through in 1907 reducing the distance from Chicago to Rock Island by 419 miles 674 km. While the canal was under construction however the Corps of Engineers undertook a widening of the locks on both the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. Patton cashier of the First National Bank of Curwensville Pa. Signed by E. M. Curtis cashier. Alexander Ennis Patton 1852-1904 became the president of the First National Bank of Patton when it was established in 1893 and was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in 1900. The Grandin brothers John Livingston Grandin 1836-1912 William James Grandin 1838-1904 and Elijah Bishop Grandin 1840-1917 in 1859 followed the lead of Edwin Drake in Titusville Pa. who had dug the first successful commercial oil well in the United States earlier that year. With oil money they established the Grandin Brothers Bank in 1870. Victims of the Jay Cooke & Co. bankruptcy in 1873 they exercised their right to take Northern Pacific Railway bonds with land-purchasing rights in the Dakota Territory rather than 15 cents on the dollar. Although the bonds themselves were worthless the 26000 acres they acquired became the largest corporate wheat farm in the Dakota Territory in the late 19th century. "25" in ink at upper right-hand corner of title page. William H. Irwin d. 1886 was a Mexican-American War veteran who served as Adjutant General of Pennsylvania from 1848 to 1852. He commanded the Juniata Guards in Mifflin County Pa. and in 1858 became captain of the Logan Guards a militia company founded in Lewistown. During the Civil War by 1862 he had become a colonel in the 49th Pennsylvania Infantry commanding the Third Brigade in Smith's Division; in 1863 he was with the 33rd Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry Militia. After the war he was breveted brigadier general for gallantry at Antietam. In Good Condition: lacking wrapper; minor loss of text along fore-edges of 3 leaves from trimming when bound with other pamphlets; title page foxed; otherwise clean. J.M.G. Lacking publication information but consistent with others in this series published by Hubbard in 1897. Contains 5 short tales about animal characters: The Quarrel -- The Wolf's First Party -- The Dissatisfied Owl -- The Squirrel's Visitor -- Meddlesome Pater. Based on 6 illustrations by Palmer Cox best known as the creator of the Brownie books. This was intended for use as a promotional booklet. The back wrapper has an illustration of a knight and jester holding a large broadside with a brownie peeking out from under it. In this case the broadside and the inside of the back wrapper have been filled in with advertising for Atmore & Son purveyor of plum pudding and mincemeat at 110 Tasker St. Philadelpha Pa. English immigrant Frederick B. Atmore was reportedly the first person to do make and sell mincemeat in the United States. After his death his son Robert E. Atmore established Atmore & Sons. In Good Condition: spine starting to separate at ends; opened carelessly with chip out of fore-edge of front wrapper with small loss of illustration and larger loss from fore-edge of 2nd leaf of text without impact on text or illustration; old stain along lower edge of wrapper and final 2 leaves and at lower end of gutter throughout; otherwise clean and bright.
