James Jr. was known locally as the CEO of Red Owl Food Store chain and was also a noted conservationist. His "Grandmother Heffelfinger" was the wife of Christopher B. Heffelfinger one of the authors of this book who from 1861 through 1864 served in Company D of the famous First Minnesota Infantry Regiment rising in rank from sergeant to captain shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg. After serving the full term of his three-year enlistment Heffelfinger was mustered out at Fort Snelling in May 1864. After a brief appointment as a relief agent in the United States Sanitary Commission in 1864 he re-enlisted in April 1865 and was appointed a major in the First Minnesota Regiment of Heavy Artillery. Heffelfinger died in 1915 while this book was about to go to press although he did read through the manuscript and made suggestions "which have been adopted in the text as it now appears." Searles Taylor Heffelfinger and two others also deceased were the members of the "Coville Commission" who had charge of the preparation of this history. <br/><br/> Easton & Masterman, printers hardcover books

19587182Iowa 1958. Collection of sixty two vintage black and white or color gelatin silver photographs individually approx. 9 x 12.5 cm. most mounted on eight loose photo pages with handwritten dates to rectos and some with captions on the versos. Age-toning to the color photographs with a few items with corner chips from mounts. Several loose photos and several spaces on the pages where photos appear to have been removed. Still overall very good as a collection. ~ A collection of photographs depicting hamburger stands and luncheonettes between the years 1952 and 1958 taken at the annual Iowa State Fair. Although the food served at each stand varies from hamburgers to fried chicken; each stand has a 7UP logo. These photos were likely taken by a representative of 7UP or someone from the State Fair committee as some of the handwritten captions mention how long the sign was in existence most are dated with the year of the State Fair. A photo caption of the sign for the stand of Christ Church Evangelical United Brethren reads "2nd year for sign"; another of a stand with signs on the front and sides reads "first year for both signs." The color photos have a Kodak stamp on the verso and are mostly taken between 1952 and 1954. While the intention may have been to document the 7UP advertising there is more recorded in the photos as well. The signs announce the offerings of each stand: "Hot Lunches" Fried Chicken" "Good Coffee!" and "Ice Cream Sandwiches" as well as the owner's who appear to be small family or single-owner operations such as Opie's Funroy and Wheeler Graham's CEC & PEG Don's Larsen's Turner's Jean & Shirley the aforementioned Christ Church Evangelical United Brethren and the White Front Café. Some that are not identified by name on the same have a short manuscript note indicating the proprietors. Styles of seating vary with stool low benches or no seating and just a walk up wooden counter. A more official looking business is the State Fair Store housed in a permanent wooden building and offering "Groceries Meats Picnic Supplies". The people of the fair appear in some images either working behind the counter sitting at the stools or benches or just milling about. An interesting collection of 1950s state fair food stands with a tie to the renowned fizzy beverage. unknown books
1841643Washington D.C. 1841. 4to. 253 x 203 mm. 10 x 8 inches. 2 pp. folded sheet. Watermarked. Docketed. Fine legible hand. Contemporary copy.  On March 20 1841 during the administration of President William H. Harrison the following circular designed to limit political activity of public servants was issued by the Hon. Daniel Webster Secretary of State: "The President is of opinion that it is a great abuse to bring the patronage of the General Government into conflict with the freedom of elections and that this abuse ought to be corrected wherever it may have been permitted to exist and to be prevented for the future. "He therefore directs that information be given to all officers and agents in your Department of the public service that partisan interference in popular elections whether of State officers or officers of this Government and for whomsoever or against whomsoever it may be exercised or the payment of any contribution or assessment on salaries or official compensation for party-election purposes will be regarded by him as cause of removal. "It is not intended that any officer shall be restrained in the free and proper expression and maintenance of his opinions respecting public men or public measures or in the exercise to the fullest degree of the constitutional right of suffrage. But persons employed under the Government and paid for their services out of the Public Treasury are not expected to take an active or officious part in attempts to influence the minds or votes of others such conduct being deemed inconsistent with the spirit of the Constitution and the duties of public agents acting under it; and the President is resolved so far as depends upon him that while the exercise of the elective franchise by the people shall be free from undue influence of official station and authority opinion shall also be free among the officers and agents of the Government." John Bell 1796 -1869 to whom this circular was addressed was one of Tennessee's most prominent antebellum politicians. He served in the House of Representatives the Senate and was Speaker of the House for the 23rd Congress. He briefly served as Secretary of War during the administration of William Henry Harrison 1841. Docketed on p. 4 in ink by Bell "J.B." indicating this was referred to the different bureaus of the War Department dated in ink at the War Dept. promptly on March 23rd. There were many later challenges and revisions to the law in the circular. The Hatch Act of 1939 officially An Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities prohibited employees in the executive branch of the federal government except the president vice-president and certain designated high-level officials of that branch from engaging in some forms of political activity. The law was named for Senator Carl Hatch of New Mexico. unknown books

1928P64651928. Leningrad: Izdanie Gosudarstvennogo Russkogo Muzeia 1928. Octavo 17.5 Ã 13.2 cm. Original decorative wrappers with a constructivist design by M. S. Brodsky; 72 pp. and 14 illustrations in the text some full-page. Very light soil to wrappers; overall a very good copy. First and only edition of this work about the hotly debated topic of "workers' art" and workers' IZO clubs comprised of amateur artists IZO being an abbreviation for Izobrazitel'noe iskusstvo or "Visual Art". The authors set out the history and basic principles of the "workers' art" movement and its connections to avant-garde art. The formation of such amateur groups was part of the push to democratize the Soviet visual arts in the service of mass propaganda and education throughout the 1920s. Under the direction of the artist Moisei Brodsky the disparate IZO clubs were unified under a more coherent program and proceeded to develop new forms for decorative and applied arts agitprop posters and design of new communist interiors "bringing art into life" and "making artists out of workers" two central conceits of the avant-garde. In an introductory essay the art historian Nikolai Punin argues for the regenerative quality of art made by workers with amateur training rather than by trained artists. The artist Vsevolod Voinov follows with a review of the 1925 exhibit of the IZO clubs at the Russian Museum where the works of the amateur artists were exhibited alongside those of the masters. Sergei Isakov traces the history of the movement to 1923 when the creation of such clubs was first proposed. In a longer essay Moisei Brodsky 1896-1944 the leader of the movement and the designer of the constructivist cover -- apparently inspired by Malevich's "Black square" -- discusses the search for "new realism" inherent in workers' art.<br/>Â <br/>The text is supplemented with photographs of the artworks exhibited at the "Iskusstvo rabochkh" Worker's art show at the Russian Museum in 1925 for which 67 IZO clubs listed by name at the end of the text provided over 1000 works. The various posters and design elements for communal cafeterias and worker's clubs are unattributed and the originals of most seem to have been lost making these photographs a rare surviving record of the contents of the show. These designs in their fragmentation of objects collaged quality and use of shadow to create volume show an unmistakable influence of Purism a movement in French painting championed by Le Corbusier among others which advocated for simplicity and precision of forms and a union of the avant-garde art with industry and technology. IZORAM an abbreviation for Izobrazitelnoe iskusstvo rabochei molodezhi or the "Visual Art of the working youth" a more focused group of worker artists was formed by Brodsky in 1928 with another exhibit of workers' art held at the Russian Museum Leningrad and later Tretiakov Gallery Moscow in 1928. The IZORAM exhibit at the Tretiakov Gallery was held at the same time and sold as part of the same ticket as a Malevich exhibit putting the abstract and "functional" avant-garde into conversation. In 1931 IZORAM was dissolved and incorporated into the newly-founded Russian Association of Proletarian Artists RAPKh. 18572921St. Paul: E.S. Goodrich territorial printer Pioneer & Democrat Office 1857. Offered with: Debates and Proceedings of the Constitutional Convention for the Territory of Minnesota to form a state constitution preparatory to its admission into the union as a state by T.F. Andrews official reporter to the convention St. Paul: G.W. Moore printer 1858. Together 2 volumes 8vo later sheep red morocco labels; Martin Minnesota Imprints 139 & 194. Debates and proceedings of the Republican and Democratic wings of the convention to make Minnesota's state constitution. A tempestuous battle had ensued over which party would control the convention as that party would dictate the provisions of the constitution and so arrange the formation of congressional and legislative districts that Senators and Representatives in Congress would be of that party's faith. The political control of Congress might depend on the outcome in the new state of Minnesota and so the whole country became interested in the election of delegates to Minnesota's Constitutional Convention. Agreement between the parties could not be reached and thus two separate conventions were convened. "The two conventions met daily. Their proceedings were uniformly orderly dignified and most interesting. Various important measures far reaching and influential in their character and nature were proposed in each convention and some of them adopted. In a few weeks after the rival conventions assembled the better judgement sound sense and devotion to the interests of the people among the members generally asserted themselves." Private conferences were held and at last Democratic leaders conferred with leading Republicans and on the 28th of August 1857 agreement was reached upon the entire draft of the constitution the printed version of which appears at the back of each volume and in the case of the Democratic Proceedings may be the earliest appearance of the constitution in print see Minnesota in Three Centuries 1908 III 42-48. <br/><br/> E.S. Mild spotting Very Good.<br/><br/> This rare Massachusetts broadside endorses the Whig program and its candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor John Davis "his fame as extended as the borders of the land" and George Hull "a specimen of the republican simplicity of the American farmer". This was a turbulent year for Whigs: their elected President William Henry Harrison had just died; his successor John Tyler of Virginia having vetoed several staples of the Whig program was proving unsound. Whigs reacted with "deep-toned expression of dissatisfaction" and "mortification." But emphasizing the bright side the Central Committee is pleased with the abolition of the Sub-Treasury and the enactment of "a uniform system of bankruptcy."<br/> Rallying the troops the authors emphasize the various "monuments of the wise and beneficent policy of the Whigs for the last fifteen years" during the Party's control of the State government.<br/>Not in Sabin or American Imprints.
