Modern binding is superb clean and handsome; text block is clean and only ever-so-slightly age toned with bit of soiling to preliminary leaves; there is the occasional spot of foxing but the majority of the text block is as bright as the day it was published. A tight and unusually attractive first edition of this early study the first of eight volumes published under Worthen's direction with assistance from J.D. Whitney Leo Lesquereux and Henry Engelmann. All called for foldout maps and plans some partly colored are present and mainly in superb condition with only the two largest of them showing some edgewear and bearing expert archival strengthening. Worthen was a renowned if self-taught leading geographer of his day and served as State Geologist from 1858 to 1875. All in all an exceptional far above average copy.
