IRCICA has long been aware of the importance of selecting, analyzing and publishing historical documents on Al Quds in order to overcome the major language barrier for Muslim and international researchers and facilitate efforts concerning the history and civilizational heritage of Al Quds. Therefore, IRCICA has started a long term project for the publication of documents in the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archives of the Turkish Republic concerning the history of Al Quds, and this book is the first outcome of the project. IRCICA has published the records on Al Quds in the Mühimme Registers which include the most important Ottoman documents containing Divan Al Humayun decisions as the first step of the project to publish documents in the archive concerning Al Quds. These documents which contain the decisions of the Council of Ministers at the time include the highest level decisions taken on the city by the Ottoman State. The First Volume of the Mühimme Registers include important information concerning the social, economic, cultural and architectural heritage of Al Quds in the 16th century. IRCICA aims to highlight the history of Al Quds under Ottoman administration by presenting these documents to the attention of scholars and researchers in their originals, transcriptions, and English, Arabic and Turkish summaries. Kagithane Province of Istanbul (Constantinople) City based on Ottoman archival documents. "Kagithane (Turkish pronunciation: [ka??t'ha?ne]) is a working class district of the city of Istanbul, Turkey, in a valley inland from the upmarket Etiler. Built along a stream that runs into the Golden Horn. In the time of Suleiman the Magnificent the valley was known as 'Sadabad' and used by the Ottoman court for hunting, riding and equestrian sports. The valley was full of wonderful tulip fields and in spring people would come along the stream for picnics and days out of the city. There are records of gatherings such as wedding parties being held here. By the late Ottoman period the valley floor had been drained, weekend homes had been built in the valley with lovely gardens, and the area led into the richly forested parks of Kagithane and Alibeyköy ideal for parties and picnics. The Ottoman gunpowder factory was the first industrial activity in the valley and dated back to the early Ottoman sultan Bayezid II. Kagithane then became home to numerous factories including flour mills and the paper factories that give the area its name. The area was still far from the city and not heavily populated until the late 20th century. Until then there were gypsy camps in the valley (and there is still a large gypsy community in Gültepe today). Real growth came to Kagithane from the 1950s onwards, as the area was settled by migrants from Anatolia, who came to work in the factories, workshops or building sites. They built small cottages on the valley sides, then brought family, friends and neighbours from the village to live in one of the rooms while they built their own cottages nearby. As many Turkish rural areas have been impoverished for decades there has been no shortage of people prepared to opt for this lifestyle in Istanbul. None of this building was regulated or controlled in any meaningful way and whenever there is a big rain people in Kagithane are flooded out of their homes. And the houses were scattered all over the sides of the valley with no thought for where they could put roads, drains or any other infrastructure. And Istanbul is vulnerable to earthquakes. This working class district was a centre of left-wing support during the years of political violence in the 1970s. From the 1970s onwards as the second generation grew up the cottages have been pulled down and replaced with grubby, bare-walled six-storey apartment buildings to house the offspring of these families. Kagithane develops". A very heavy volume. Extra shipping fee will be requested. CONSTANTINOPLE Ottoman culture State archives Ottoman history Istanbul Byzantium Urban history.

Sadberk Hanim Müzesi Koleksiyonundan mineli ve murassa eserler. [Exhibition catalogue]. The "Jewel" exhibition, which has been organised this year on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Sadberk Hanim Museum, presents enamelled and jewelled objects in the Turkish-Islamic Section of the museum. The exhibits reflect Ottoman tastes in objects set with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and other precious stones, and exquisitely crafted enamelled artefacts. They include objects for a wide variety of uses, such as belt buckles, writing boxes, pen cases, spoons, coffee cup holders, mastic jars, sherbet cups, pocket watches, fans, fly whisks, tobacco pipes, snuff boxes, brooches, Ottoman decorations and slippers. Throughout history glittering gold and silver objects studded with precious gems have been one of the most eye-catching manifestations of imperial splendour. Apart from the surviving jewelled objects themselves, archive documents, the writings of Ottoman authors and foreign travellers, contemporary paintings and miniatures demonstrate the extensive use of precious metals and gems to adorn items ranging from book bindings to costume in Ottoman culture. As in many Ottoman period arts and crafts, jewelled objects reveal a distinction between the work of court artists and ordinary craftsmen. Since the jewelled and enamelled objects in the Sadberk Hanim Museum collection tend to follow court tastes, most of them were evidently used and worn by people in or close to court circles. They display a wide diversity in terms of function, and although the majority date from the late Ottoman period, overall they cover a broad time span from the 17th century to the 20th century, and include some produced in Europe for the Ottoman market as well as those produced in the Ottoman Empire over this period. Makka Al-Mukarrama and Al-Madina Al-Munawwara in photographs from the Ottoman period.= Osmanli dönemi fotograflariyla Haremeyn.= Fotograf dari zaman Uthmaniyah. Makkah and Madinah are specifically safeguarded by Islamic jurisprudence and considered to be "harem" (sacred) and are called "haremeyn", meaning sacred cities. They were where the Holy Qur'an was revealed and the originating points of the Islamic faith's history and civilisation, besides being the locations where Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) spent his worldly days. They are maintained not only as places of worship, but also as sources of inspiration and invaluable heritage of the Islamic civilisation. In support of this effort, the National Visual Arts Development Board (NVADB) in cooperation with IRCICA, a body established under the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), is currently presenting an exhibition of rare photographs that record various events that took place in Makkah and Madinah during the Ottoman rule. The photographs offer the audience the bucolic glimpse of how both holy cities looked like prior to massive modernisation and development, including the conditions that pilgrims of the past had to endure when performing Hajj and Umrah, which strike a chord among present day pilgrims. Holy Islamic vestiges such as the domes the cover the cemetery of Prophet Muhammad's immediate family members and companions in Madinah that had been demolished could also be seen in the images displayed. The photographs exhibited are selected from the collection of Sultan Abdulhamid II (r. 1876 - 1909), the 34th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire who was also known as "The Great Khan", and from the collection of Fahreddin Pasha (1868 - 1948), the Commander of the Ottoman Army and Governor of Madinah, also known as "The Lion of the Desert." Some of these exhibits have been preserved and maintained by IRCICA, which is involved in research, publication, archives and documentation on Islamic history, culture and civilisation.
