New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 264 p. The Young Turks: Struggle for the Ottoman Empire, 1914-1918. The Unionists hoped to do so by avoiding any further wars and ending their isolation by forming an alliance with the Triple Entente composed of England, France and Russia. When they were turndown by the Entente powers, they turned to Germany. Berlin finally signed the alliance after the war had begun in Europe in August. Germany's reason was ideological: the Ottoman Sultan-Caliph could broaden the war by declaring jihad or "holy war" against the Entente powers, causing Muslims to rebel in British India and Egypt, French North Africa, and the Russian Caucasus. Though the Ottomans were allied with Germany, they believed that the alliance did not commit them to enter the war. But their treasury was empty and the economic situation precarious. Only Germany was willing to give loans, but only on the condition they enter the war. Istanbul was forced to submit and entered the war after the Black Sea incident when Ottoman ships -led by a German admiral- bombarded Russia's ports on 29 October and the Entente declared war on the Ottomans in November. Istanbul declared jihad on the 11th and that turned a European war into a world war, thus extending it by perhaps three years. This book is a study of the Young Turks and their struggle to save the Ottoman Empire during the Great War of 1914-1918. It is the sequel to The Young Turks the Committee of Union and Progress in Turkish Politics, 1908-1914.

126p. Inked ownership of S. W. McNabb, United States Attorney, Los Angeles. Signed letter from Mr. McNabb to Mr. M. L. Beistle, August 13, 1927, in part stating "the book written by Honorable James M. Beck on the question of investigation by the Senate of the seating of Senator Elect Vare of your state. sending you a copy of this book. which I think from a legal standpoint is absolutely sound". 8vo. Original full blue cloth binding. Hardbound. First Edition. In 1926 Philadelphia Republican political and racket boss, William S. Vare announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. Both the primaries and general election were scandals. After having apparently won the election, then Governor Gifford Pinchot, who had been drubbed by Vare in the primary, refused to certify the election. In January 1927, Pinchot testified before the Senate, producing several thousand illegal paper ballots. Nevertheless, the Senate informed Vare that they would get back to him. In the interim Vare began smoking, drinking and eating to excess. This led in August of 1928 to a stroke that nearly killed him. In December 1929, Vare was summoned before the Senate where he was informed that while he won the election, they could not agree to him being seated. However, Vare took it to mean that he was being denied the seat because of Pinchot's charges. As a result, in the 1930 Gubernatorial Primary, Vare supported the Democratic nominee John Hemphill, who lost to Pinchot. At this point a palace coup emerged at the Republican City Committee, where he was ousted, and replaced by Secretary of Labor James J. Davis. Four years later, Vare was attempting a comeback as a Democrat. All the while his health deteriortated, and he died on the sixth anniversary of the 1928 stroke. Beck was a Former Solicitor General of the United States and member of the American Philosophical Society. AMERICANA BOX 8

New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 200 p. The urban development of Istanbul in the Nineteenth century: The role of expropriations. After the proclamation of the Tanzîmât Edict, the government wanted to re-arrange the city. To this end, the Building and Expropriation Regulations that determined how modern city planning would be made as of 1840 were published. It was clearly stated that the government would base expropriations made to expand roads, allotment of burnt areas again, determination of construction rules, and opening the areas where reconstruction was not allowed to settlement,in essence all new urban development activities on these new laws. While expropriations were carried out, it was emphasized that, especially when for "public interest", the operation would be made with the consent of the landowner and after the preparation of maps. All of these can be said to be the reflections of modernity. This book examines the expropriation activities which were the most important tools for the government in the process of reconstruction implemented in Istanbul in the nineteenth century. It argues that the urban development which is at the intersection of centralization and modernization, and the concept of modern expropriation was a consequence of the change in the perspective and the understanding of the Ottoman government. Additionally, in the book, while the concept of modern expropriation is being evaluated in relation to the transformation in the governmental and legal mentality, the economic and social aspects of the expropriations are also emphasized. Other reconstruction processes occurring in other cities in the Ottoman Empire and other European cities which were taken as models in the reconstruction process of the capital city were investigated and documented here for the sake of approaching the expropriations from a comparative angle. This book aims to offer a holistic addition to literature on the urban history of Istanbul in the nineteenth century.
