Suna ve Inan Kiraç Vakfi Fotograf Koleksiyonu. [Exhibition catalogue]. The photographs collected constituted the kernel of the Foundation's Photography Collection. Since the day the Istanbul Research Institute was opened in 2007, this collection grew with acquisitions and other donations, reaching approximately 130,000 photographs, with Istanbul as their main focus and covering a period from the 1850s to the 1960s. Years of classification and identification have finally brought us to the point of being able to create new projects. As a result, we have planned the Suna and Inan Kirac Photography Collection Series, which will consist of thematically structured groups of photographs. This album-book is the first publication in this series, discussing the architectural journey of Sisli Mosque, the first monumental religious building of Republican Istanbul. One of the reasons we have chosen Sisli Mosque is that this is the first mosque in the city's history that was built not under the aegis of the sultan or statesmen but through the collective effort of the people. Another reason is that Sisli Mosque, unlike the architectural thought and production of the 1940s, which was shaped throughout the country by winds of modernism, reflected the classical Ottoman style and has been accepted as a stylistic example, providing a prototype for neo-Ottoman mosques built in its wake. In addition, the photographs of the mosque we publish here have almost exclusively been taken by Foto Sabah, one of the leading studios of the period, which indicates that the process of the mosque's construction between 1947 and 1949 was deliberately documented at regular intervals. In those years when documentation and preservation was not habitual and architectural work was seldom archived, such an effort is noteworthy. We hope that this title and the album-books we will publish will help researchers in analyzing Istanbul's historical identity.

This is a historical, political and legal study of the Shan al-Arab dispute between the government of Iran and the Republic of Iraq, a dispute which has not received the international attention it deserves, while it is a perpetual threat to peace in this area of the Middle East. The Iranian government claims that the Shaft al- Arab is a border ever between the two states and, being a navigable river, it should be divided between Iraq and Iran according to the Thalweg line. This claim has always been unacceptable to Iraq, and not in accordance its the historical facts. Dr Khalid al- Izzi has attempted to study this dispute as objectively s possible, relying upon Iraqi as well as Iranian sources. As a lawyer, the author hopes that his work may help in solving this dis-ute which has for so long marred relations between these two Islamic countries. Those who are interested in the study of Arab- Persian relations will !so find this book useful and stimulating. Mainly contents: Part I. History of the Conflict: 1. New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 220 p. The scramble for Iran: Ottoman military and diplomatic engagements during the Afghan occupation of Iran, 1722-1729. This book is a study of the Ottoman military and diplomatic involvements in Iran during the critical years that followed the collapse of the Safavid dynasty. Contrary to the image of an Empire that followed largely passive and defensive policies in the early eighteenth century, this study will reveal that the Ottoman Empire was remarkably proactive in this period. The Ottomans under the political leadership of Damat Ibrahim Pasha (d. 1730) designed their Iranian policies during the 1720s with a distinct awareness of European international politics as well as of local Iranian politics and with the aim not just to protect but also to improve the position of the Empire in a changing global order. Diplomacy constituted an important dimension of the Ottomans' engagements in Iran, culminating in the 1724 Partition Treaty with Russia, which arranged for the division of the Safavid territory between the Ottoman and Russian empires. War-making constituted the other facet of Ottoman engagements in Iran, and was motivated by complex military, strategic, administrative and economic calculations. Finally, their engagement in Iran brought the Ottomans in contact, and for a time, in conflict with another power, the Afghan invaders of Isfahan. In the religio-legal disputes with the Afghan ulama, the Ottoman side evoked a universalist understanding of the caliphate in anticipation of trends that historians have conventionally dated to the late nineteenth century.

108 pages. "What I have learned of the logging and loggers has been picked up in the Coast districts of Washington and British Columbia. That I have tried to picture unusual characters amongst loggers, and have said little of the unnumbered thousands of fine upstanding, many men in the industry, is not that I'm unaware of them. The unusual always get more attention. In the Saga I speak from personal knowledge, not heresay. And the characters I attempt to picture are not fictitious, nor are the incidents in which they are involved." - from author's note to the reader.
