Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. [x], [2], 481 p. The Ottoman Empire and the world-economy. (Studies in modern capitalism - Etudes sur le capitalisme moderne). This collection of essays represents a departure from the traditional perspective, recently questioned by many scholars, from which Ottoman history is usually written. Central to the establishment of Western domination over the 'East' is the writing of its history in terms of Western hegemony, above all in the case of the Ottoman Empire, which has been characterised as static, irrational and authoritarian in contrast with the dynamic, rational, democratic West. This book contrasts sharply with conventional studies of the Ottoman Empire, based on this European world-view, that focus on political military, and cultural institutions. Following a series of general theoretical discussions about Ottoman social structure, the contributors turn to case studies directed either to theoretical problems or to 'facts' which suggest new avenues of conceptualisation.

"Zeytinburnu: A quarter monography: A common but wrong belief about the Zeytinburnu District is that the settlement in this area has begun with the slum formation and has had a past of about thirty of forty years. However, the studies carried out show that the settlement in the area has a very old past. This area was very important militarily and religiously the Byzantine Istanbul, known as the 'Second Romeî'. Among the historical structures taken over in this period by our district that was on the passage way of the Byzantine Army were Yedikule Fort to which Sultan Mehmed II Conqueror made some editions and Baliklama Ayazma (Holy Spring) and Church. Balikli Spring first became the subject of an epic on the Byzantine enthronement Of Leon I and became known with its modern name owing to an epic that is rumored to have been created during the conquest of Istanbul (Constantinople). Also, we can wholeheartedly say that our Zeytinburnu District has a rare wealth in terms of Islamic mysticism. Dervish Lodges within the boundaries of our district such as Perisan Baba, Hadji Mahmud Aga, Seyyid Nizam and Merkez Effendi Dervish lodges, as well as Yenikapi Mevlevi House, mentioned as a music academy, have been occasion for the education of extremely important figures of our mystic history.".
New English Original bdg. HC. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 282 p., ills. The Orthodox church in the Early Modern Middle East: Relations between the Ottoman central admnistration and the patriarchates of Antioch, Jerusalem and Alexandria. The study of the history of the Greek Orthodox Church in the Ottoman Empire has long been shaped by the model suggested by the proponents of millet system. In this model, the role attributed to the Eastern Patriarchates (Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria) is one of submission to the demands of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Greek Orthodox lay elites called Phanariots. Hasan Çolak challenges this view by shifting his focus from the Patriarchate of Constantinople to the very relations between the Ottoman central administration and the Eastern Patriarchates. Introducing the concept of ?patriarchal elites" which was formed in parallel to the Phanariot ?lay elites" against the infiltration of Catholicism, the author explains the centralisation of the Eastern Patriarchates at a time often referred to as an age of political decentralisation. Beginning to establish closer ties with the Ottoman central administration and the Greek Orthodox of Istanbul in the 18th century, the Eastern Patriarchs began to cooperate more with the Ottoman central administration than their partners during the initial periods of the Ottoman rule in the Middle East, namely foreign courts and semi-autonomous provincial rulers. The book is based on rigorous research on unpublished and unexplored Ottoman correspondence between the Ottoman central administration and the Eastern Patriarchates, published Greek patriarchal documents, and French missionary and diplomatic sources.

Controlling substantial territories in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and North Africa for several centuries, the Ottoman Empire constituted animportant place in the history of many Christian communities and theirChurches.
