The Istanbul letters of Antun Vrancic: Croatian and English translation of selected latin letters.= Carigradska pisma Antuna Vrancica: Hrvatski i Engleski prijevod odabranih Latinskih pisama. Prep. by Oguz Aydemir. Antun Vrancic or Antonio Veranzio, was a Croatian prelate, writer, diplomat and Archbishop of Esztergom in the 16th century. Antun Vrancic was from Dalmatian town of Sibenik (modern Croatia), then part of the Republic of Venice. Vrancic is also known under his Latinized name Antonius Verantius, while Hungarian documents since the 19th century refer to him as Verancsics Antal. In 1549, Vrancic entered Ferdinand's service. In parallel to his diplomatic duties, he held important positions in Catholic Church (the chief dean of Szabolcs County, abbot of Pornó Abbey). In 1553 he was appointed as a bishop of Pécs and sent to Constantinople to conduct negotiations with sultan Suleyman I on Ferdinand's behalf. That mission was previously declined by many other diplomats as an earlier negotiator was imprisoned by the Ottomans. Vrancic spent four years in Asia minor and finally concluded a peace treaty. After his return he was appointed bishop of Eger (17 July 1560 - 25 September 1570). After the Battle of Szigetvár in 1566, as one of Maximilian's ambassadors, Antun was sent to Turkey to negotiate peace again; he arrived in Constantinople on 26 August 1567. After five months of negotiations with Sokollu Mehmed Pasha and Selim II, agreement was reached by 17 February, and the Treaty of Adrianople was signed on 21 February 1568, ending the war between the Holy Roman Empire and Ottoman Empire. In appreciation of his diplomatic work, the king named him archbishop of Esztergom (17 October 1569 - 15 June 1573). During his stay in Istanbul, together with Ogier Ghislain de Busbecq, Vrancic discovered Res Gestae Divi Augusti (Eng. The Deeds of the Divine Augustus), a Roman monument in Ankara. His travels throughout the Transylvania, Balkan and Asia minor resulted in his writing extensive travel accounts. By writing letters to the Habsburg Kingdom almost every day, the diplomat telling the daily life of Istanbul gave examples of his culture and art works. Letters written 450 years ago provide important information about the diplomatic tradition of the 16th century and the behavior of the two emperors.

Very Good English Original bdg. with new spine. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 15 cm). In English. [xxviii], 507 p., 1 folded engraved color plate of Sebastopol from the sea, 12 numerous folded plans and maps. First Edition. Third volume. The invasion of the Crimea: Its origin, and an account of its progress down to the death of Lord Raglan. Vol. III. Kinglake was an English travel writer and historian. He was born near Taunton, Somerset, and educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was called to the Bar in 1837, and built up a thriving legal practice, which, in 1856, he abandoned to devote himself to literature and public life. His first literary venture was Eothen; or Traces of travel brought home from the East (London: J. Ollivier, 1844), a very popular work of Eastern travel, apparently first published anonymously, in which he described a journey he made about ten years earlier in Syria, Palestine and Egypt, together with his Eton contemporary Lord Pollington. Elliot Warburton said it evoked "the East itself in vital actual reality" and it was instantly successful. However, his magnum opus was THE INVASION OF THE CRIMEA: Its Origin, and an Account of its Progress down to the Death of Lord Raglan, in 8 volumes, published from 1863 to 1887 by Blackwood, Edinburgh, one of the most effective works of its class. The History, which Geoff Bocca describes as a book "by which no intelligent man can fail immediately to be fascinated, no matter to what page he might open it" has been accused of being too favourable to Lord Raglan and unduly hostile to Napoleon III for whom the author had an extreme aversion. The town of Kinglake in Victoria, Australia, and the adjacent national park are named after him. A Whig, Kinglake was elected at the 1857 general election as one of the two Members of Parliament (MP) for Bridgwater, having unsuccessfully contested the seat in 1852. He was returned at next two general elections, but the result of the 1868 general election in Bridgwater was voided on petition on 26 February 1869. No by-election was held, and after a Royal Commission found that there had been extensive corruption, the town was disenfranchised in 1870.

New English Original decorative cloth bdg. In publisher's special box. Folio. (34 x 24 cm). English Edition. 283 p., b/w and color ills. Türk giyim sanayiinin tarihi kaynaklari. The industrial heritage of costume design in Turkey. Contents: Foreword; Introduction.; 1. Historical sources of Turkish Costume.; 2. Ottoman textile manifacturing.; 3. Dress transformation in Ottoman Empire in the 19th century.; 4. Ottoman textile and clothing products at early international industry exhibitions.; 5. Reflections of industrial revolution in Ottoman Empire and historical factories. The publication of this illustrated history of Turkish costumes through the ages commemorates the tenth anniversary of GSD Foreign Trade CO., Inc. Established in 1986, GSD is today the largest exporter in Turkey, occupying a unique and prominent position in the garment industry. We have prepared this volume in the hope that it will serve as a reference book and a document of enduring cultural value. This work is also intended to commemorate the nameless designers, manufacturers and workers who have toiled through the centuries to contribute to the historical formation and development of the Turkish ready-to-wear industry. The borders of the far-flung Ottoman Empire encompassed an extraordinarily rich variety of styles of dress. The development, change and technological evolution over time of these different styles and traditions are reflected in many aspects of the grand historical adventure that began in Central Asia, expanded into one of the largest and most long-lived empires of modern times and evolved; after ten centuries, into the Republic of Turkey. Reverberations of the historical development of Ottoman costumes can be detected in many spheres, especially in international relations, economic and social developments and the interaction of culture and art. This volume sets out to explore the origins and inspiring influences of the Turkish garment industry in an historical perspective and illuminate the development of this cultural and industrial heritage. GSD Foreign Trade Co. is pleased to mark its tenth anniversary with the publication of this book. I would like to thank our chairman Mr. Turgut Yilmaz and all the members of Board of Directors for the support they have given this project. This book has been prepared by Professor Önder Küçükerman, highly respected scholar and artist. With his customary enthusiasm and care, Professor Küçükerman has elucidated many aspects of Turkey's cultural and industrial heritage, introducing us to the treasures inherited by the Turkish ready wear sector, an industry that today is applying advanced methods and techniques in an increasingly widespread manner. I would like to express my thanks once more to Prof. Küçükerman, and give my compliments to Mr. Atilla Aksoy, who has elevated this book to an artistic level.

Fine English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 52 p. Winner of the Special Prize in the Ottoman Bank Archives and Research Centre's competition unveiling the history of Turkish banking and finance in 2001, John Karatzoglou's The Impreial Ottoman Bank in Salonica; The First 25 Years (1890-1890) reconstructs the atmosphere in this branch of the bank in the late nineteenth century. The second largest Ottoman city in the European part of the Empire, Salonica was a vibrant city where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived and worked together. Like the city, the local branch of the Ottoman Bank reflected the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the Empire. Based on data from the Ottoman Bank's personnel archives from the Salonica branzch, Karatzoglou has pieced together profiles of the employees, their positions, and their experiences in the bank. He produces the flavor of a local society on the eve of momentous change.
Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (19 x 13 cm). In English. 222 p. B/w ills. 'The Ottomans developed a highly organized society with many traditions. However, the writing and publicising of 'memoirs' was not one of them. Even the most illustrious Grand Vizier did not avail his personal diary to others for perusal (even if he ever did put them in black on white). This is what makes Leya (Saz) Hanimefendi's book rather unique. She was taken into the 'Harem' of Sultan Abdulmecid at the age of four and lefty Çiragan palace only to be married. She is the only woman who wrote (or rather dictated to her son) her actual experiences of life at the Çiragan Palace where Sultan Abdulmecid reigned. Her references to many incidents, from the utensils used to the Ladies' Orchestra make this book interesting both to the layman and to the historian. Her great sense of propriety and admiration for the way of life she enjoyed at the palace (despite the vigorous discipline) is another factor that makes reading these memoirs a jotfull experience'.
