1828215881828. Slavery & Abolition This archive contains two British parliamentary acts addressing the suppression of the transatlantic slave trade. Both published in London by George Eyre and Andrew Spottiswoode. The first document "An Act to Continue an Act for Amending and Consolidating the Laws Relating to the Abolition of the Slave Trade" 25th July 1828 was issued under the reign of King George IV. It reinforces prior legislative measures aimed at abolishing the slave trade within the British Empire and its territories ensuring penalties for violations and the removal of enslaved individuals from illegally operating vessels. The second document "An Act to Revive and Continue Until Six Months After the Commencement of the Next Session of Parliament and to Amend an Act for Authorizing Her Majesty to Carry into Immediate Execution by Orders in Council Any Treaties Made for the Suppression of the Slave Trade" 14th August 1838 was enacted under Queen Victoria. This act sought to extend and strengthen Britain's ability to enforce anti-slavery treaties with foreign nations allowing for immediate action against those engaging in the slave trade. 6867London 1733. Sheets" ; 37 x 24 cm.Ten pages printed on a total of the six leaves of three folio bifoliums leaf dimensions roughly 40.5 x 25 cm. The first part apparently intended to fold around the others is unpaginated and printed on the recto of the first leaf and the verso of the last leaf of the bifolium. Each page consists of a list divided into three columns of small print giving details of the vote with the names of the members their constituencies and a key revealing biographical information e.g. 'Privy-Counsellors' sic and 'for and against Maintaining the Hessian Troops'. The first section is aged and with several closed tears and with some loss resulting in damage to three words. The second and third sections are in better condition though creased and on aged paper and stitched together and paginated 3-10. Pp.3-6 consist of the section entitled 'The Lords Protest' reporting a debate on the Bill in the House of Lords on 23 February 1732. Pp.7-10 carry the poem with pp.9-10 consisting of 'Britannia Excisa: Britain Excis'd. Part II. Tune of Packington's Pound.' At the head of p.7 is a sensational engraving 11.5 x 16.5 cm of a five-headed monster pulling a coach in which a figure Walpole sits complacently. The monster representing the bill flings goods this way and that with its mouths while two figures on foot run for cover. The first part of the poem begins 'Folks talk of Supplies To be rais'd by Excise Old Caleb is bloodily nettl'd;'. The first stanza of the second part reads 'Ye Knaves and ye Fools ye Maids Widows and Wives Come cast away Care and rejoice all your Lives; For since England was England I dare boldly say There ne'er was such Cause for a Thanksgiving Day; For if we're but wise And vote for the Excise Sir Blue-S--ing Walpole 'Sir Blue String' alluding to the ribbon of his Order of the Garter declares as you know he ne'er lies! He'll dismiss the whole Custom-House rascally Crew And fix in each Town an Excise-man or two.' The manuscript reproduces exactly with omissions the text on pp.79-94 of the publication 'Debates in the House of Commons on a Resolution Preparatory to the Introduction and in the House of Lords on the Motion for the Second Reading of the Bill for Removing the Civil Disabilities of the Jews … Reprinted from the Mirror of Parliament at the request of the Committee of the Jewish Association for obtaining Civil Rights and Privileges' London: Printed for the Proprietors of “The Mirror of Parliament†3 Abingdon-street Westminster 1934. There are a couple of indications of a foreign origin: first the style of writing with the personal pronoun appearing throughout as a small i and the numbering having a foreign feel; second a the style of printing of a shelfmark 'Va III. - 4.' on a slip of paper on the last leaf. The shelfmark is accompanied by a circular stamp in black ink containing the acronym 'BMPF'. It may be that the manuscript was transcribed from the newspaper in order to provide an interested foreign party with an account of the debate before publication in book form. [ 1834. ] unknown

Edward Corbett Colonel late Shropshire Militia.'London: Richard Bentley and Son 1890. Both the letter and the proofs are in good condition on lightly-aged paper. LETTER: 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. 34 lines of text in a particularly difficult hand. He will endeavour to 'throw all the light' he can on the subjects mentioned in his correspondent's letter beginning:: 'I think the time between Cape Curig & Holyhead must be correct. The distance is 40 miles & the time allowed 3h 53m which is just about what would be required.' After a paragraph discussing the '2d & 3d tables' he writes: 'I dont know where you have got these Tables from but in the Post Office Directory from which I supplied the list & rates no Famouth mail was given only one to Exeter & another through Exeter to Devonport. Please see my remarks at the bottom of the table.' He concludes: 'Would it not be interesting to the public especially now at the jubilee of the penny post to insert a Table giving the rates of postage in olden days If so I have a copy of "Pattersons sic roads" which gives one & which I could sent to you to be copied.' 243901 April 1815. Taunton Somerset. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. At the time of writing a year and a half before his death Horner was Member of Parliament for St. Mawes in Cornwall. 1p 4to. Eighteen lines neatly written. Addressed to ‘My dear Harrison’ and signed ‘Fra Horner.’ In good condition lightly aged with negligible remnants of windowpane mount adhering at edges of blank reverse. Folded for postage. He has received both of Harrison’s letters and is ‘particularly obliged’ to him for ‘sending the copy of Stephen’s communication. The omission is much to be expected to which the escape of the convicted slave-dealers is owing; but it is very important that we should be if possible by an official communication of the opinion of the Attorney General to state to the Subscribers the real grounds of the pardon granted against these men. When it is properly explained the matter throws new disgrace upon Thorpe.’ He has not seen the third edition of Thorpe’s book ‘nor the notice with which he has there honored me’ and he begins to feel ‘very anxious about the report to be made to the General Assembly’. He ends with details of his return to London. Note: He is referring presumably to the trials of the Slave Traders Samuel Samo Joseph Peters and William Tufft slave traders and "A letter to William Wilberforce Esq. Dillon's entry in the Oxford DNB states that on 6 March 1889 he ‘sailed for Australia to solicit contributions; he also toured New Zealand and returned to Ireland via the United States in late April 1890. His mission raised about £33000’. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. Addressed to ‘My dear Miss Meredith’ and signed ‘Yours very Sincerely / John Dillon’. In fair condition lightly aged with very light transfer of ink from another letter from blotting pad onto third leaf including signature. Folded for postage. In reply to a letter he states that he would ‘certainly go down’ to see her if he were ‘in London during the spring - but I hope to sail to Australia on the 1st March & expect to be away till the end of September’. He asks to be remembered to her father whose name Dillon saw ‘on the Protest Committee with very great pleasure’ and whom he hopes ‘is gaining strength’.
