1828215881828. Slavery & Abolition This archive contains two British parliamentary acts addressing the suppression of the transatlantic slave trade. Both published in London by George Eyre and Andrew Spottiswoode. The first document "An Act to Continue an Act for Amending and Consolidating the Laws Relating to the Abolition of the Slave Trade" 25th July 1828 was issued under the reign of King George IV. It reinforces prior legislative measures aimed at abolishing the slave trade within the British Empire and its territories ensuring penalties for violations and the removal of enslaved individuals from illegally operating vessels. The second document "An Act to Revive and Continue Until Six Months After the Commencement of the Next Session of Parliament and to Amend an Act for Authorizing Her Majesty to Carry into Immediate Execution by Orders in Council Any Treaties Made for the Suppression of the Slave Trade" 14th August 1838 was enacted under Queen Victoria. This act sought to extend and strengthen Britain's ability to enforce anti-slavery treaties with foreign nations allowing for immediate action against those engaging in the slave trade. Both pieces are significant records of Britain's legal efforts to combat slavery in the early 19th century and underscore the ongoing legislative process that led to the full abolition of slavery across the British Empire in 1833. The documents feature the royal coat of arms period typography and official parliamentary language making them valuable historical artifacts in the study of British abolitionism. Original thread binding missing minor edge wear. Overall very good condition. unknown
1780W1890London: Charles Eyre and William Strahan 1780. Title page pp. 691-696. Folio. First edition. Printed on laid paper. Disbound from larger volume. "An Act to allow the exportation of provisions goods wares and merchandize from Great Britain to certain towns ports or places in North America which are or may be under the protection of His Majesty's arms; and from such towns ports or places to Great Britain and other parts of His Majesty's dominions." The effect of this act was to amend the American Prohibitory Act of 1776 to to allow the resumption of trade betwenn Britain and those parts of the American colonies that remained under British control. The Prohibitory Act had been the final straw that led to the American Revoltion but if Parliament thought the 1780 revisions would reverse British fortunes in the colonies they would be disappointed: The Restoration of Trade Act was too little and too late. The document is in very good condition: clean and bright with 4 tiny bookworm holes in bottom margins--well away from the text. First Edition. Paper. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Manuscript. Charles Eyre and William Strahan Paperback

12132Enniskillen. 16 August 1924. 1p. 4to. Eighteen lines. On creased and lightly-aged paper. On 21 February 1924 in the House of Commons Lansbury 'asked the Secretary of State for War if his attention has been called to the fact that the Officers' Association have sent in a claim to the Army Council for compensation on behalf of Lieutenant C. H. Glendinning 3rd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles on the grounds of the false imprisonment conspiracy and persecution to which this officer was subjected whilst serving in India during 1917'. Giving the recipient's name as 'Glendining' twice Healy considers that if Lansbury would put a 'further question' to the Secretary for War on his behalf 'perhaps he will do something'. He continues: 'Did Mr. L. let you see the dossier they sent him - a sort of precise sic of your case. It was I think the Sec of State for War's summary to his Majesty. It was dead against you and rather unfair I thought. It was marked "private" and Lord Bentinck and I got other copies. The non-delivery of papers is not much help to your case I fear - I mean letters dealing with that aspect.' He concludes by saying that he is 'surprised at the result of the Welsh inquiry for I thought he meant to do justice to you. Evidently the forces within his department were stronger than he.'
