Bound by 'J. Low' of Chancery Lane. In a full blue calf binding with a gilt crest of the Law Society of the United Kingdom to the front boards. Externally smart with some very light rubbing to the boards. Each volume has some minor rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. Internally firmly bound. Samuel Rawson Gardiner’s illustrated biography of Cromwell who led parliamentary forces in the English Civil War helped depose and execute Charles I and served as lord protector of England Scotland and Ireland from 1653 until his death in 1658. Gardiner 1892-1902 was an English historian teacher at Oxford and popular lecturer. His major work was Constitutional Documents of the Puritan Revolution and he was also prolific in the ninth edition of Encyclopaedia Briannica.
