Cartier also represents almost 150 years in the history of a company its designers and their works of art. Cartier's history is so rich that few jewelers can rival it. For a long time the artworks made in the Rue de la Paix workshops were created for a clientele of great world figures - a wealthy and famous elite from five continents the great royal houses of Europe American tycoons Indian maharajahs and stars of stage and screen. The high society politicians writers and artists of the 19th and 20th centuries all loved and collected Cartier jewelry watches and accessories. Clocks and watches are a particularly fascinating part of the great Cartier tradition which continues successfully today on all markets of good taste and modern elegance. Jeweler-watchmaker or watchmaker-jeweler Cartier is a master in both areas. From pocket watches to wristwatches and from mysterieuse pendulum clocks to travel alarm clocks creating timepieces is one of the pillars of the Cartier empire. Le Temp de Cartier is bringing all these treasures of the great Cartier watchmaking tradition to the attention of a wider public. Until now only a privileged few have been able to admire them. The exceptional masterpieces jealously guarded in the rue de la Poix archives in collectors' safes and in the Cartier Museum have now come out into the light to sparkle on the pages of this book which tells their Story. A few light scattered stains but generally quite clean and fresh inside. Very good and in original condition. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase. First edition first issue. Engraved frontispiece. 158 pp. 8vo. Authorship of this work is uncertain but Howes theorizes that one Captain Walsh is the author. Whoever wrote it served as an officer in the Comte d'Estaing's squadron and is highly critical of his conduct. This work describes the operations of the French fleet in 1778-79 beginning with the departure from Toulon and covering the blockade of the British at New York; the planned but aborted naval battle off Newport; the encounter with the British fleet under Admiral John Byron; and finally the attack on Savannah Georgia. This is one of the best sources for the Savannah attack. An important Revolutionary naval item here present in the first edition first issue of the text.
Of great interest to the history of medicine and Rio de Janeiro.
_x000d_
Rare 1st edition of this work the only one published. It was presented to the Royal Academy of Sciences in July 1821 and was only approved for publication at the Academy"s session on 8 June 1827 five years after the author"s death. This delay had to do with the very unstable political situation which affected the functioning of the institutions particularly the absolutist reaction of 1823-1825 against the Vintist liberals. Authorisation to print the work only came during the first period of the Constitutional Charter of 1826 which brought some political tranquility.
_x000d_
The work arises partly from the author"s desire to bring together the knowledge and practices he acquired over more than thirty-five years of medical practice most of them in the populous city of Lisbon; but also from his desire to demystify the fevers of Rio de Janeiro which at the time were thought to be abundant and very contagious with observations he collected after settling in that city in 1817 especially on pages 36 to 68. He addresses the complexity and contradictions related to the treatment of fevers in medical practice describing the cases he treated the respective treatments and the use of various types of medicines such as quinine arsenic and purgatives.
_x000d_
Francisco de Melo Franco Paracatu Minas Gerais 1757 - Ubatuba São Paulo 22 July 1823 Commander of the Order of Christ was a Portuguese doctor graduated in Medicine from the University of Coimbra a pioneer in the field of childcare and one of the most important doctors in the Portuguese court of his time author of important works in the field of medicine and satirical poetry.
_x000d_
Born in Minas Gerais he was part of the Brazilian elite who travelled to Portugal to study medicine at the University of Coimbra. As a student he was sentenced to five years in the convent of Rilhafoles in Lisbon by the Inquisition Court accused of being a heretic a naturalist and a dogmatist in a trial of faith held in 1781. As usual he only served one year of this sentence continuing his studies in Coimbra from 1782 to 1786 and then settling in Lisbon where he gained a reputation as an outstanding clinician. He was appointed honorary physician to the Royal Chamber and was knighted. He became a corresponding member of the Lisbon Royal Academy of Sciences and began to collaborate regularly with that institution on matters of medicine and natural sciences.
_x000d_
In 1817 he moved to Brazil accompanying Princess Consort Maria Leopoldina of Austria on her trip to Rio de Janeiro and eventually settling in that city.
_x000d_
He is the author of a number of influential works in the field of medicine and political philosophy such as: «Tratado da educação fÃsica dos meninos para uso da nação portuguesa» the first book on paediatrics written in Portuguese and by a native of Brazil; «Elementos de Higiene ou dictames theoreticos e practicos para conservar a saude e prolongar a vida». He was the secret author of the controversial Medicina Theologica ou súplica humilde feita a todos os senhores Confessores e Directores sobre o modo de proceder com os seus penitentes na emenda dos peccados principalmente da lascÃvia cólera e bebedice 1794 where the author draws on the most advanced medical discussions of his time to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of the moral remedies applied by theologians to combat sins choosing the somatic field as the main cause of the passions which is why the salvation of the soul would depend on the health of the body. He is also the author of the satirical poem - O reino da estupidez which circulated in manuscript and was only published after his death.
_x000d_
For the date of death we took into consideration the Revista Trimensal do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro tome V 1843; Teófilo Braga and Inocêncio.
_x000d_
Referências/References:
Borba de Moraes I 322.
Inocêncio III 10-11 1505.
M-9-D-41 paperback
