_x000d_
EN In 8º 20x14 cm. viii-119-iv pp.
_x000d_
Binding: Contemporary full calf.
_x000d_
Copy with ex-libris.
_x000d_
In Tratado de educação fysica. there are several advices given not only on the best way to raise children but also on the care that should be taken with the health of the parents. In a society in which marriages between older men and younger women were common it is considered improper the marriage of young women whose body is not yet developed enough for gestation. It presents advice on clothing to be used during pregnancy breastfeeding and feeding of children. Praise of physical exercise from an early age and the very importance of fencing in strengthening and developing muscles and joints. A savvy work in which at that early time important information was written about the hygiene of pregnancy bathing feeding weaning sleeping cradling and the exercises of the child making it an excellent treatise on childcare.
_x000d_
Inocêncio III 11: Francisco de Mello Franco had a Bachelor's degree in Medicine from the University of Coimbra was an honorary doctor of the Chamber of the King João VI Partner of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon etc. He was born in Piracatu in the province of Minas Gerais Brazil in 1757. Having his first studies at the seminary of St. Joachim of Rio de Janeiro he came to Portugal where he completed his preparatory studies and later enrolled in medical school. He was accused apparently a calumny of following irreligious ideas and was thrown in prision by the Inquisition and there lay for a few years before being released. He returned to finish his studies and got his degree degree then settled in Lisbon where he developped his work for many years with great credit and profit. In 1817 by order of King João VI he was called to accompany the Archduchess Maria Leopoldina to Brazil where she was to marry the Royal Prince. He did not have the reception by the royal court that he was expecting being the entrance to the palace denied to him due to the recent events of Pernambuco that raised strong opinions against the liberal doctrines passionately defended by Mello Franco. Having lost all his fortune due to the fraud of a merchant to whom he confided his savings and the proceeds of the sale of his goods in Portugal thus all of his his resources and the wealth of his children disappeared. Broken with all these mishappens and may be affected by the change of climate he developped a fever that could not be cured by science at that time. Returning from a trip he made to the province of S. Paulo in an attempt to seek some relief in his illness when arriving to Ubatuba he recognised that the end was near and asked to be brought to land where he died in a hut on July 22 1823.
M-9-C-7 hardcover

Norman 828. Pierre Franco's "Traité des Hernies" is a groundbreaking work in the history of medicine originally published in 1556 and greatly expanded in this second edition from 1561. Franco one of the most innovative surgeons of the Renaissance despite his humble origins made significant contributions to the field of operative surgery elevating it from the hands of charlatans and itinerant 'cutters' and bringing it back into the realm of respected medical practice.

Born to a poor family in Provence Franco never received formal university education—a remarkable detail considering his impact. Instead he trained as a barber-surgeon a less prestigious position that provided extensive practical experience. Franco's importance stems from several groundbreaking achievements. The Traité represents the first comprehensive text dedicated entirely to hernias and their surgical treatment. Franco meticulously documented various types of hernias and standardized their classification when most practitioners relied on unstructured knowledge passed through apprenticeship.

Franco introduced new techniques and instruments such as performing the first documented suprapubic lithotomy removal of bladder stones in 1556 on a child when traditional approaches proved impossible a technique that eventually became standard practice. He also refined techniques for cataract treatment perfecting the "couching" method and pioneering early forms of lens extraction. His work on hernia surgery was particularly groundbreaking as he developed a method for performing herniotomies without castration a common practice at the time.

Unlike many contemporaries who deferred to ancient authorities Franco prioritized direct observation and experience. By publishing in French rather than Latin he made surgical knowledge accessible to practicing surgeons without classical education. The detailed work on specific procedures laid the groundwork for surgical specialization and the woodcuts in this expanded second edition featuring 25 new illustrations not found in the first edition documented specialized instruments many of Franco's own design serving as prototypes for surgical tool development well into the 19th century.

Franco's systematic approach established standards that elevated the reputation of surgery as a legitimate medical discipline. He directly influenced later surgical giants including Ambroise Paré who acknowledged Franco's contributions. This 1561 edition represents a crucial moment in the development of modern surgery documenting techniques that established principles that remain relevant in contemporary surgical practice nearly five centuries later.

“… influential in bringing operative surgery back into the realm of regular surgical practice recapturing it from the ignorant hands of charlatans and itinerant ‘cutters'â€.
