196012011Fort Madison Iowa: Sheaffer Pen Company 1960. Presentation Set. Very good. From the 1960 Richard Nixon Presidential Campaign a commemorative set of pens for the head speechwriter Bryce N. Harlow. Brass dedication plaque on black marble base. Chip to one of the pens along the barrel. Pens were manufactured by the Sheaffer Pen Company of Fort Madison Iowa the preferred pen manufacturer for Nixon documents. Dedication plaque reads: "Bryce Harlow / With Grateful Appreciation / For Devoted Service Beyond The Call Of Duty / In The Battle Of 1960 / Dick Nixon." A scarce piece with no record of other campaign gifts like this appearing on the public market. Bryce N. Harlow 1916 - 1987 began his career in the executive branch serving as an administrative assistant head speechwriter and deputy assistant for congressional affairs in the Eisenhower Administration. In 1960 he was a speechwriter for Vice President Nixon's unsuccessful presidential campaign. With Nixon's election in 1968 Harlow was one of the first presidential appointments of the new administration serving as a congressional liaison and later Counselor to the President. Harlow was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981 by President Ronald Reagan. He died in 1987. Sheaffer Pen Company unknown

Richard Milhous Nixon January 9 1913 - April 22 1994 was the 37th president of the United States serving from 1969 until 1974. A member of the Republican Party Nixon previously served as the 36th vice president from 1953 to 1961 having risen to national prominence as a representative and senator from California. After five years in the White House that saw the conclusion to the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War détente with the Soviet Union and China and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency he became the only president to resign from the office following the Watergate scandal. He graduated from Duke University School of Law in 1937 and returned to California to practice law. He and his wife Pat moved to Washington in 1942 to work for the federal government. He served on active duty in the Navy Reserve during World War II. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1946. His pursuit of the Hiss Case established his reputation as a leading anti-Communist which elevated him to national prominence. In 1950 he was elected to the Senate. He was the running mate of Dwight D. Eisenhower subsequently serving for eight years as the vice president. In 1968 he ran for the presidency and was elected defeating Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace in a close election. Nixon ended American involvement in Vietnam in 1973 ending the military draft that same year. Nixon's visit to China in 1972 eventually led to diplomatic relations and he gained the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union. Derived from a Kirkus review: "I intended to play the role of the President right to the hilt and right to the end." Thus RN whose words read less like memos here than they did in the newspaper excerpts and more like the last will and testament of a fighter who never willingly gave ground. Had he been urged to resign he avers he would have rebelled; and his review of the two occasions - the "secret fund" crisis the second v.p. nomination - when he felt himself crowded and didn't cave in back up his claim. "And tell them I know something about politics too!" he quotes himself as shouting over the phone in the first instance to a wheedling dissembling Tom Dewey. He was a mere freshman senator then built up by the Hiss case but always had ideas of his own. Not public affairs: He had nothing against communism he says until Churchill's Iron Curtain speech. So it's when he's talking politics that his celebrated caginess becomes an asset and his acumen is in evidence; and only then too is he interesting about people. Poor Rose Mary Woods for instance turns up unheralded whereas Bob Haldeman scores for spotting the potential of campaigning-by-TV not whistle-stop train. By the same token while the extensive travels are dull the final days are distinctly not: Intent on being a leader from the time when four years out of law school he was president of every organization in sight he is fully aware of what's slipping away. He records the silence - instead of the usual applause - that greeted his entrance to the last Cabinet meeting the "sober noncommittal" faces as he thanks his aides for their support; and like a prospective suicide he imagines the effect his farewell cables will have on Chou and Chairman Mao "in Cairo and Tel Aviv in Damascus and Amman" - where "eight weeks ago I had been accorded unprecedented acclaim." 1991130791991. 37th President. Typed letter signed one page quarto. New Jersey April 12 1991 on personal letterhead to Honorable William Hyland. In full: "Dear Bill Talk about going into the lion's den. I thought you would like to see a list of those who attended an off-the-record appearance I made at a Carnegie Endowment forum in Washington Wednesday. I guess they thought that by having me they would balance the fact that Alger Hiss was once their President! Sincerely". During the Red Scare of the 40's and 50's Alger Hiss was accused of secretly being a Communist while in federal service. After Hiss appeared before Congress and denied being a Communist Nixon a Congressman at the time pressed the Committee to continue the investigation. Hiss was found guilty of two counts of perjury. In a curious way the reputation of Alger Hiss was permanently linked to that of Richard Nixon. The Nixon-haters have always been eager to exonerate Hiss while Nixon's fans are usually convinced of Alger's guilt as a spy. When Nixon was doing well for example when he was Vice-President and when he was a popular President during his first term Hiss's reputation suffered a decline. When Nixon did poorly as after his disastrous run for governor and especially during and after the Watergate crisis more people thought of Hiss as an innocent victim. "File" notation in blue marker at the top right otherwise in excellent condition. In over 2 decades it's the only Nixon letter we have ever seen mentioning Alger Hiss. unknown

Frame measures 17.5 x 23.25 inches; exposed poster measures 16 x 22 inches. Age-toning with wear commensurate with age including two closed tears. An early campaign poster for Richard Nixon 1913-1994 likely printed for his 1950 Senate campaign with the staggering slogan "A Vote for Honest Government." As it turned out Nixon's political career was marked by a level of dishonesty unmatched in recent history until the Trump administration assumed power. <p>Regarding dishonorable political practices the only reference we've seen to this poster was in a photo accompanying a New York Times article on convicted felon Roger Stone: A framed copy hangs in his residence.</p> .
