Published by Warner Books NY in 1982 ~ Signed and inscribed "<em>To Rose Mary Woods-- Who knows all about leaders / With best wishes / from RN / 11-23-84 </em>". Also signed by Nixon at limitation as issued. Rose Mary Woods was Nixon's secretary and close friend and center of the Watergate erased tape controversy. As NPR wrote it "Woods will be remembered for the infamous 18.5-minute gap in one of the Watergate tapes not because she erased it but because she said she had erased only part of it by mistake." A significant association with the one person other than his wife who was there through all of Nixon's political life. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by both Toledano and Nixon to editor William Randolph Hearst Jr. son of William Randolph Hearst the newspaper despot and subject of Orson Welles's film CITIZEN KANE. It was Hearst who was largely responsible for the Hollywood image of the hard-drinking cynical reporter always in pursuit of breaking news. The younger Hearst shared the 1956 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for his interviews with the new Russian leadership and in 1959 he would cover Nixon's visit to the Soviet Union. Nixon's inscription reads: "To Bill Hearst/who is always a/friend in good or/bad weather -- from/Dick Nixon." Over the course of time Nixon's attitude toward journalists became much less friendly. Modeled after JFK's Profiles in Courage this memoir sees Nixon reflecting on his participation in six major political events. The book composed after his election defeat gives readers insight into the political mind of a man who would become the 37th president of the United States. A Republican lawyer Nixon served in both the House and Senate before being elected as Vice President 1953-1961 and late President 1968-1973; an office he held until the Watergate scandal forced his resignation. The book is inscribed to William Clinton Mullendore 1892-1983 the President of the Southern California Edison Company. He was a major donor to the Nixon Library. Leaders offers a detailed examination of the relationship between Nixon and various foreign leaders whom he met throughout his lifetime. The book met with critical praise aiding the rehabilitation of his political image following his resignation of the presidency in 1974. Octavo.
