New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 369 p. "Jewish Istanbul is about the folkloric culture of its Jews and their language that survived over five centuries within the perimeters of the multicultural city of Istanbul, throughout the reign of the Ottoman Empire into the 20th century. It is about the journey of Judeo-Spanish, the language brought to the Ottoman Lands by the Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal following the Inquisition and their expulsion in 1492. The collection of childhood memoirs, originally written in Judeo-Spanish pay homage to this endangered language that was last transmitted to the Jewish baby boomers of Istanbul, while the life of the 1950s and 1960s still carried remnants of this unique culture with long history. The English translation is for the future generations to explore the language and the folklore of the Jewish Istanbul as it was once experienced by the multilingual and multicultural Jewish children of Istanbul.".

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 m). In English. 114 p. The "Law on Trades and Services Reserved to Turkish Nationals" was passed by the Turkish Grand National Assembly in June 1932. It aimed to exclude from the Turkish job market foreign nationals residing in Turkey who were employed in petty trades and services, such as drivers, street vendors, servants in hotels, etc. On one hand the law was a manifestation of the mentality and policies of protectionism that developed in reaction to the 1929 World Economic Crisis and its effects on the Turkish economy. At the same time, the law was also a xenophobic reaction that had its origins in Turkish society's bitter collective memories of their struggle for independence and the early years of the Turkish Republic. This study takes up the subject of the law's actual application on the basis of previously unused archival documents. Contents: Abbreviations / Introduction / The Situation the Early Years of the Republic / The Situation in the Years Prior to the Acceptance of the Lew / Discussions at the Turkish Parliament / The Text of the Law / The Situation After the Passage of the law / Initial Reactions / The Number of Foreigners Affected / The Postponement of the Law's Implementation / The Publication of the Law's Regulations / The Situation of the Various Nationalities / The Case of Greek Nationals / The Case of Russian Emigrés / The Case of French Nationals / The Case of German Nationals / The Case of British Nationals of Malta Origin / The Case of the Shipping Agencies / Conclusion / Chronology of Events.
