Harold Meek chess correspondent of the London Evening News. Three Autograph Letters Signed 'H. Meek' regarding 'cooks' to chess problems by Lee and Shaw. With signed copy of original letter from the recipient.

16027Two of Meek's letters on editorial department letterheads of the Evening News London. Dating from October and November 1941. The copy of the recipient's letter from 12 Heath Villas Vale-of-Health Hampstead NW4 London; 11 October 1941. The four items in fair condition aged and worn. ONE: Copy of Typed Letter to the editor of the Evening News signed 'T' or 'P'. 1p. 8vo. Providing another solution in descriptive notation of a problem published on 9 October. TWO: Meek's first letter dated 15 October 1941. 1p. 4to. Headed 'Prob. by Lee'. Replying to Item One he writes: 'It certainly looks as though you have "cooked" the above problem with 1 . B-Kt8. The composer gave several "tries" but he evidently overlooked the move you have found. I will send your discovery to him.' THREE: Meek's second letter dated 30 October 1941. 2pp. 4to. Demonstrating that his suggested solution to 'problem by Shaw' fails. 'Capture or checking key-moves are usually regarded as a bad feature in a problem unless the subsequent play is of such a character as to justify such a move. The judges evidently thought this was the case in the other problem by Shaw which you refer to'. Concludes by informing him that 'Mr. Lee . admits the "cook" of course and says that it escaped a good many people besides himself'. FOUR: Meek's third letter dated 4 November 1941. Addressed by hand from '"Evening News" Chess'. 2pp. 12mo. Headed 're Prob. by Shaw'. Briefly restating the contents of Item Three which the recipient has not received.
