Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1749, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Allegory on the three ages of man, after Titian; landscape with in the right foreground, seated on the ground, a naked young man and a woman playing pipe, on the left a winged putto stepping over two sleeping children, and beyond an old man contemplating a skull. The painting is now in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh. From 'Raccolta Di Opere Scelte'.Around 1749 it was decided that the plates executed by Lefevre for the famous "Opera Selectiora" set were to be republished. Because of a change in taste, and because they had worn off, the plates were either retouched with burin work by artists such as Giuseppe Waggner and Johann Gottfried Saiter, or completely remade. The set was published as "Le opere scelte dipinte da Tiziano Vecellio di Cadore, e da Paolo Cagliari di Verona" (Venice, 1749). A second edition, with added plates from the collection of Lovisa, was published by Teodoro Viero (Venice, 1786) under a different title: "Raccolta Di Opere Scelte Dipinte da Tiziano Vecellio, Antonio Regillo detto il Pordenone, Giacomo Robusti detto il Tintoretto, Paolo Calliari Veronese, Dario Varotari detto il Padoanino, Li Bassani, Giacomo Palma, Giuseppe Salviati, e varj altri celebri Maestri della Scola Veneziana, che fiorirono ne' tempi posteriori. Disegnate, ed Incise in parte Da Valentino Le Febre Di Bruxelles, ed in parte Da Silvestro Manaigo, e da Andrea Zucchi Veneti". 59 pages. "This is the autobiography of the poet-artist from the unremembered to the closing years of her life. She was born of pioneering families who came to Vancouver Island near the middle of the nineteenth century, when the forests, lakes, rivers and the sea coasts were untouched by industry. Influenced by her mother's French artistic people from the Baie des Chaleurs, and her father's philosophical family from Ontario which embraced vegetarian and natural living, she inherited a strange pathway in life. This is a work of words and paintings. It is a journey. A journey through realization of life. This struggle of an artist will do much more than draw your admiration of I. Arleigh Martell. It will make you cherish life itself!" - Preface. Illustrated in colour. Light wear. Unmarked but for 3"x1" beige moisture stain and spot of peeling at top edge of front cover. Tight and square. Hardcover with dusjackets, 2 volumes set., 588 pages ., 372 b/w ill., 180 x 265 mm, Languages: English. ISBN 9781872501338. This two-volume publication explains the history of Rubens's book containing famous examples of Genoese Renaissance architecture intended to trace the development of architecture in his own country and all over Europe, analyses his comments and interpretations of the original plans and reproduces all drawings. In 1622 Rubens published a splendid volume on Genoese Renaissance architecture, with precise engravings depicting façades and plans of a dozen villas and palaces. In publishing famous examples of 'modern' architecture, Rubens intended to trace the development of architecture in his own country and all over Europe. He believed that the true principles of good building, both aesthetically and functionally, were discovered by the Ancients and rediscovered in Renaissance Italy. In publishing his book at the height of his fame, Rubens succeeded in presenting himself not only as a great painter but also as a connoisseur and authoritative teacher in the field of architecture. This two-volume part of the Corpus Rubenianum explains the history of Rubens's book, analyses in detail his comments and interpretations of the original plans and reproduces all drawings.
