With 4 black silk marker ribbons. A very good 19th century parayer book with an interesting provenance. "St Christopher le Stocks was a parish church on the south side of Threadneedle Street in the Broad Street Ward of the City of London. Of Medieval origin it was rebuilt following the Great Fire of London in 1666 but demolished to make way for an extension of the neighbouring Bank of England. The parish was united with that of St Margaret Lothbury in 1781 and the church pulled down the next year. In 1839 Saint Bartholomew by the Exchange was added when its church was also demolished. Brinton - Daniel Garrison Brinton was an American archaeologist and ethnologist. Brinton was born in Thornbury Township Chester County Pennsylvania. After graduating from Yale University in 1858 Brinton studied at Jefferson Medical College for two years and spent the next year travelling in Europe. He continued his studies at Paris and Heidelberg. From 1862 to 1865 during the American Civil War he was a surgeon in the Union army acting during 1864-1865 as surgeon-in-charge of the U. S. Army general hospital at Quincy Illinois. Brinton was sun-stroked at Missionary Ridge Third Battle of Chattanooga and was never again able to travel in very hot weathers. This handicap affected his career as an ethnologist. Carce title describing the written histories of the Mayan culture. This former library volume is bound in red cloth. There is a library applied spine covering exhibiting hand written lettering. The item shows heavy shelf wear with heavy chipping to the preliminary pages. The text block and binding are sound.
