He established empirical rules for the analysis of spectral lines which remain associated with his name. In 1897 he discovered the Anomalous Zeeman Effect a phenomenon noted when the spectral lines of elements were studied in the presence or absence of a magnetic field. Preston reported in an important paper published in The Scientific Transactions of The Royal Dublin Society read on 22 December 1897 and published the following April that he reported results more complicated than Zeeman had reported. Following this up further he reported in a second paper in the RDS Scientific Transactions read on 18 January 1899 and published the following June that he had found results that were 'very startling' and appeared 'quite contrary to all theoretical explanations'. The full explanation had to wait for the theory of relativity and the introduction of quantum mechanics which were to shake the rigid framework of Newtonian conceptions of absolute time and space. Preston's results were an important step in this development.

Preston was at the forefront of the Maxwellian research programme led by George Johnstone Stoney and George Francis FitzGerald. Preston famously tackled Stoney in what became a public dispute over a mathematical conclusion in this research programme which concerned electromagnetic and spectroscopic sciences. Stoney who is accredited with naming the electron was in opposition to Preston on this particular matter. John William Strutt 3rd Baron Rayleigh president of the Royal Dublin Society intervened in this argument in Prestons defence.

He was educated at The Royal School Armagh the Royal University of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin. From 1891 to 1900 he was Professor of Natural Philosophy at University College Dublin. He was a Fellow of the Royal University of Ireland and of the Royal Society London and was a distinguished spectroscopist. His two major textbooks remained in continuous use for over 50 years. He enrolled in Trinity College Dublin in 1881 working under the physicist George FitzGerald known for his work in electromagnetics and graduated with a BA in mathematics in 1885. The previous year he had sat the Royal University of Ireland degree examinations which also earned him a BA from there with a first in mathematical science. He enrolled in Trinity College Dublin in 1881 and worked under the physicist George FitzGerald known for his work in electromagnetics. While at University College Dublin he wrote a book The Theory of Light. In 1899 he won the second Boyle Medal presented by the Royal Dublin Society. He died at his home Bardowie Orwell Park Rathgar Dublin on 7 March 1900 of a perforated ulcer just as he was reaching the height of his academic powers."--wikipedia.

SEE OUR OTHER LISTINGS FOR MORE INTERESTING RARE AND COLLECTIBLE BOOKS.
. It is a milestone in the mapping of the American West. Wheat Here in the rarest and most desirable form with the plates and maps in a quarto atlas.

Pike's narrative along with that of Long and Lewis and Clark is one of the most significant early books on the exploration of the American West. As such it is a cornerstone of Western Americana. In particular Streeter felt its "description of Texas is excellent." Hill gives the following summary of its contents: "In 1805 Pike was given the difficult assignment of conducting a reconnaissance of the upper Mississippi region. He was ordered to explore the headwaters of that river to purchase sites from the Indians for further military posts and to bring a few influential chiefs back to St. Louis for talks. The trip was only moderately successful as a mission to the tribes but Pike was able to convey important geographical information to President Jefferson and other Washington officials. On Pike's second expedition 1806-1807 he was assigned to explore the headwaters of the Arkansas River then proceed south and descend the Red River from its source. Pike and his men were taken into custody by a Spanish patrol and Pike was able to observe many areas in New Mexico Chihuahua and Texas. His book created interest in the Southwest and stimulated the expansionist movement in Texas." The atlas volume consists of the following maps plus three tables: 1. "Falls of St. Anthony." 2. "Map of the Mississippi River from its Source to the Mouth of the Missouri laid down from the notes of Lieutn Z. M. Pike by Anthony Nau. Reduced and Corrected by Astronomical observations of Mr. Thompson at its source; and of Captn. M. Lewis where it receives the waters of the Missouri." 3. "The First Part of Captn. Dawson seal expedition in 1891
N.p.
N.d. c. late 19th C 1891

Oblong 14 x 18.5cm album disbound accordion style. Paper mache over wood boards with an intricate embossed design and gold and red pigment. Stiff card pages are bordered in pale blue with mounted tinted album photographs 10.8 x 14cm. Most are captioned in pencil in English in the margins of the card mounts. The leaves are disbound/unhinged. 25pp 42 photos. 8 of the 50 sides are blank with no photo mounted. There is no evidence of any photos having been removed.

The posed Japanese photos appear to be from photography studios in Japan that catered to tourists. Among these studio portraits are photos of sumo wrestlers women with umbrellas in a rickshaw washing and applying makeup and posing as dancers. There are also picturesque views of Nagasaki. A photo of the bronze horse statue at Suwa Shrine è«è¨ªç¥žç¤¾ Suwa Jinja in Nagasaki mislabeled a ‘temple’ in the album does not have an enclosure around it dating it to between 1870 when it was first dedicated and 1913 as a corral was built around it during the Meiji period.

Scenes of villages from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska are pictured as well as locations in Russia. Included are photos of people on a rustic main street in Petropavlovsk Russia the SSS Danube in Avacha Russia a seal rookery and a group photo that includes Sir George Smyth Baden-Powell 1847–1898 and scientist and explorer Sir George Dawson 1849– 1901.

On June 23 1891 an article appeared in the NY Times stating that the two men were made British Commissioners in the Bering Sea seal question and an October 22 1891 article from the same newspaper announced the arrival of Baden-Powell and Dawson in Ottawa Canada after returning from the expedition to observe seal hunters dating the photos from late June to October of 1891. This expedition was important in gaining evidence that was used in arbitration that voted in favor of England against the U.S. As the expedition was an official one undertaken largely in secret it is possible that the photos of the area were taken by a member of that expedition likely a Westerner and skilled amateur or professional photographer. A full report of that expedition undertaken on the chartered steamer Danube also in the photos was accessed 1.2.23. https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/ptid=hvd.hwyprv&view=1up&seq=11
The British Man-O’-War Porpoise which is included in the photographs is mentioned as accompanying the group.

Photos overall are in good condition a few are slightly faded some with tissue guards interleaved. Chipping to edge of cover. An unusual combination of studio and candid photos with historic significance in stunning lacquer paper-mache covers. unknown
1910848531910. PHOTOGRAPHY - 20TH CENTURY ORIGINAL PRESS PHOTOGRAPH - ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON NEW YORK CITY MAYOR WILLIAM JAY GAYNOR 1910. American Press Association event occurring August 6 1910 reverse of photo dated August 10. Silver gelatin print photograph 6 9/16 x 8 1/2 inches. Small chip and slight creasing to bottom lower corner faint impression to top from marking on reverse. The three men in the photo are framed from the torso up. The photograph shows the wounded Mayor Gaynor who survived the attempt but died three years later from lingering effects supported by two unidentified "friends." The reverse bears typed notes to the effect that the photo was taken by the American Press Association's photographer unnamed and that the photo was taken moments after Commissioner Edwards knocked the would-be assassin a disgruntled former city employee to the ground. Gaynor was aboard ship in New York Harbor about to depart for a European vacation when the attempt occurred. He was shot at point blank range in the throat. The outlines of the Mayor's hat and coat as well as the two men's faces have been enhanced by hand presumably for press reproduction. unknown
