Scattered light gray discoloration throughout rubbing with some small areas of associated loss in the lower left image area at the sheet edge. Inscriptions in pencil on the verso including an illegible signature. This charming landscape features the structure now known as the Worplesdon Place Hotel near Guildford Surrey. The house is of notable historical significance and it is registered to have been built in about 1845 by Sir William Bovill. Initially called Worplesdone Lodge the grand manse served as a private residence for the next 100 years and was owned by several notable people. In the 1950s it became a hotel and still operates in this manner today. Here we see the house soon after its completion with St. Mary the Virgin Church seen on the hill in the distance. unknown

1793W1578Dublin Ireland: P. Wogan P. Byrne J. Moore and W. Jones 1793. Frontispiece vi 2 303 pages. The first printing of the Dublin edition preceded in the same year only by the 2-volume first London edition--both preceding the first U. S. edition published in 1794. The Dublin edition is significant not only for its apparent scarcity but also for the frontispiece an unusual mezzotint portrait of a younger Benjamin Franklin that appears in no other edition and has seldom if ever been reproduced. The clean and tight book has been sympathetically rebacked retaining the original red leather title patch. All edges of the textblock were stained a pale green perhaps when the rebacking was done--the staining intrudes 1/16" onto the top and bottom margins of the frontispiece.Very light and faint foxing throughout; occasional smudges in the margins. Two large but light waterstains to the frontispiece but only minor and relatively unobtrusive intrusion into the image. Missing the front free endpaper. The book's condition is much nicer than it sounds; certainly an acceptable copy for the serious collector. First Dublin Edition. Hardcover. Collectible-Very Good. Small 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. Leather. P. Wogan, P. Byrne, J. Moore, and W. Jones Hardcover

55587Representation of one of the battles conduced by Michele Arcangelo Pezza also known as Fra Diavolo at the end of the eighteenth century. He was a famous Neapolitan guerrilla leader who resisted the French occupation of Naples proving an inspirational practitioner of popular insurrection. Pezza figures prominently in folklore and fiction. He appears in several works of Alexandre Dumas including The Last Cavalier: Being the Adventures of Count Sainte-hermine in the Age of Napoleon not published until 2007 and in Washington Irving's short story ""The Inn at Terracina"". His nick-name ´Fra Diavolo´ litterally Brother Devil was given to him when he was a young boy. Soon after he was born he became sick. His mother swore to St. Francis of Paola that he would take care of his sick son. In return the child would have been wearing a sackcloth until complete consumption. Michele recovered so during his childhood he wore the sackcloth. Once at school his unsettled behavior made his teacher pronounce such words as:´You are not Friar Michele Arcangelo! You are Friar Devil!´. Thence he was renown with such a name throughout his all life. This large woodcut was probably an image of a popular publication from Ulm or Nurenberg from around 1830. In the typical and somewhat primitive style of the popular graphic arts from the first half of the nineteenth century. Titled above:´Fra Diavolo oder die grossen rauber in den Abruzzen.´ Woodcut on paper; total: 395 x 470 mm; brown stain on he top left corner otherwise in very good conditions. hardcover
