Internally very good slight tanning to a few pages. Honore Gabriel Riqueti comte de Mirabeau 1749-1791 was President of the National Assembly of France. Mirabeau was imprisoned intermittently after an altercation with a nobleman from 1774 until 1782. He was able to gain his freedom and defeat an impending death sentence through his oratory and legal acumen. This work An Essay on Despotism first published in 1775 helped establish Mirabeau as a powerful critic of the old regime. "Du fond d'un cachot le genie de la Revolution Mirabeau lance l'anatheme au despotisme et reduit celui qui se croit roi simplement parce qu'il est fils de roi a la condition d'un salarie que ses sujets peuvent remercier brutalement de ses services." Ch.L. Chassin. He was also an associate of the American Ambassador Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson who provided him with American pro-liberty pamphlets. Mirabeau played an import role in draft the 1789 "Declaration of the Rights of Man". As the revolution became increasingly radical Mirabeau attempted to divert it to a more moderate course in the mold of England's constitutional monarchy. His death in 1791 allowed for the more extreme elements of the revolution Robespierre to come to greater prominence. On this book Gazette Litteraire states: "C'est l'ouvrage le plus fort qui ait encore ete ecrit sur la matiere. Il fut compose durant les dernieres annees doppression du regne de Louis XV pour ranimer les restes d'une liberte mourante dont il depeint les injustices les vexations les atrocites avec une plume de fer." A compendium of curiosities culled from ancient writings in an effort to present indelicate subjects such as onanism tribalism etc. in a manner acceptable to the general public. Written while Mirabeau was imprisoned in the castle of Vincennes the book was according to Kearney pursued with such vigor by the authorities that only fourteen copies of the first edition have survived - a number almost assuredly inaccurate. Following a second edition of 1792 Errotika was included in the Papal Index of prohibited books. "A further edition was ordered to be destroyed in 1826 by the Royal Court of Paris and for 'outrages against public morality and good manners' there were two other prosecutions in 1856 and 1868" Kearney. The book was published in several subsequent editions and was included by Apollinaire along with some of Mirabeau's other prison writings in his scholarly edition of 1910 issued in the Bibliotheque des Curieux series. A rare work of erotica written in prison in Paris while the author was sentenced to die for "abduction and seduction." Erika Delbecque Special Collections Librarian at University of Reading writes of this book: Organised by different sexual practices and perversions into eleven chapters including topics such as bestiality 'Béhéma' female homosexuality 'L'Anandryne' and nymphomania 'La Linguanmanie' it purports to offer a history of human sexual behaviour. Mirabeau draws on quotes from the Bible and ancient sources to provide historical examples of each sexual practice and attacks the corruption of the clergy and the aristocracy in the process. Various curiosities are culled from ancient writings relating to sexual practices such as onanism tribalism sodomy nymphomania etc. : ""The author in addition to the talent of perfectly mastering ancient languages writes very well in his own joking lightly and often drawing on Voltaire's style: in the very dirty pictures he sometimes presents he always uses honest or technical expressions: besides he seems well versed in the art of voluptuousness"" contemporary 18th century review quoted in Gay-Lem. II 151. According to the legend the book was relentlessly censored by the authorities and only fourteen copies of the first edition had survived - an estimate which seems to be quite inaccurate. After a second edition in 1792 the book was prohibited and included in the papal index. Another edition was destroyed in 1826 by the Royal Court of Paris and two further prosecutions were brought in 1856 and 1868 for ""outrage à la morale publique et aux bonnes murs"". It was written during his imprisonment by a lettre de cachet in the castle of Vincennes in 1777 for having run off with another mans wife Marie Thérèse de Monnier his Sophie as he called her. He was condemned to death for rape and abduction but his eloquence in pleading his case resulted in the annulment of the sentence.
