1914020485Macmillan: 1914. Sept. 1914 first printing 233 pages. "Present-day discussion on the high cost of living shows some bewilderment in the mind of the general public as to the mechanism by which the scale of money prices is determined. Few people realize that the principles determining the general scale of prices are quite distinct from the principles determining the individual prices them themselves. The object of this book is to state as simply as possible the general principles which fix the scale of prices and to show the manner in which these principles apply to the present "high cost of living."" "For about a hundred years the world has been suffering from periodic changes in the scale of prices affecting the interests of hundreds of millions of human beings and producing alternate expansions and depressions of trade. It is not too much to say that the evils of a variable monetary standard are among the most serious economic evils with which civilization has to deal. In the United States we are about to witness some extremely interesting applications of the principles here stated owing to the great two acts passed by Congress toward the close of 1913 i.e. the tariff act and the currency act." 18212605
London: The Pamphleteer A.J. Valpy 1821.

Scarce pamphlet featuring five letters by Jean Baptiste Say in response to "Principles of Political Economy" by Robert Thomas Malthus. Say 1767-1832 was a giant in free-market economics and wrote these letters criticizing the economic views of Malthus 1766-1834 whose "Principles of Political Economy" appeared in 1820.

Malthus of course was probably better known for his controversial earlier work "An Essay on the Principles of Population" in which he predicted that population growth would outstrip global food production leading to mass starvation and death.

In terms of economics their disagreements centered on the causes of depressions. Both men wrote in the wake of the depression and high unemployment that followed the Napoleonic Wars hence the reference to "general stagnation of commerce" in the title of Say's collection of letters. Malthus believed that depressions were caused by general overproduction of goods while Say thought general gluts were impossible arguing that supply creates its own demand "Say's Law" as it's known to economists.

This pamphlet was removed from a bound volume of "The Pamphleteer" a collection of pamphlets and speeches regularly issued by London printer and publisher A.J. Valpy. This piece was published in Vol. 17 No. 34 in 1821 one year following the publication of Malthus's book.

The text of this pamphlet appeared as part of a longer work by Say "Letters to Mr. Malthus and A Catechism of Political Economy" issued in 1821 by Sherwood Neely and Jones of London. Chez Bossange in Paris issued the original French edition in 1820.

This pamphlet is scarce in both the antiquarian book trade and in institututional holdings. OCLC shows about a dozen holdings in North America and Europe under different accession numbers.

PHYSICAL DETAILS: Octavo 8 x 5 1/8 inches; 203 x 130 mm 3 292-345 1 pages in sewn printed wrappers soft cover.

CONDITION: Some creasing and evidence of water staining small tear near gutter of pages 321-322 not affecting text flaking to spine. 1933163j1671London: Elliot Stock. Good. 1933. Second Impression. Paperback. "As a protest against those Statesmen and bankers who have asserted that 'No one could possibly have foretold the present World Crisis' Great Depression I and a few others have urged the republication of Mr. Arthur Kitson's Criticism of the Cunliffe Currency Committee's Report the recommendations of which the Lloyd George Coalition Government adopted. This Criticism was originally printed at the expense of Mr. Kitson and copies furnished to every member of that committee in January 1919 before the committee had made its final report. It will be seen that Mr. Kitson gave ample warnings of the inevitable results of the committee's recommendations and foretold the present crisis." - A.F. on page 7. "Arthur Kitson 1859-1937 was a British monetary theorist and inventor. He formed the Economic Freedom League with Frederick Soddy and was active in this venture through the 1920s. He became convinced Jewish bankers were the cause of his 1925 bankruptcy and most of the world's miseries. He sent Ezra Pound a copy of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion even before Pound changed from a money radical to a notorious anti-Semite. By the time of his death Kitson was the second most influential fascist in Britain the first being Oswald Mosley. In his late years he was brought to Germany to consult with Nazi Party economists." - Wikipedia. 4 102 pp. Stated second impression. Ottima conservazione, marginoso, in barbe e parzialmente a fogli chiusi. Rara edizione apparsa lo stesso anno dell'originale. Cfr. Kress, 5691; Einaudi, 1927.
Cm. 29, pp. 76 + cc.
Cfr. McCulloch: "The only authentic account of the finances of France previously to the Revolution".
Esemplare particolarmente fresco e ben conservato.
