Oblong 4to. 526 pp. Frontispiece trademark illustration and numerous other illustrations from line drawings and photographs. Padgitt Brothers Company was established in 1869 and incorporated in 1900; the company's success "in supplying the needs of the saddlery trade of the Southwest gave them first-hand knowledge of materials and design that were recognized as standard wherever good goods are sold." Their catalogues were "a veritable encyclopedia of saddlery facts classified for your convenience . there is no reason why this book should not prove a 'silent partner' in the success of every dealer who will utilize its pages freely." The profusely illustrated catalogue with pricing information is organized into sections for saddles and varieties of tack down to spurs buckles hobbles canvas wagon covers buggy tops blankets and feedbags. The Padgitt "Bronco Brand" saddle and accessories were widely known throughout the Southwest. Illustrated with wood engraved frontis depicting the 'Baldwin Locomotive Works' factory 11 intratextual cuts & 16 pasted-in photographs of divers Baldwin locomotives. 4to: 11" x 7-5/8" <br/><br/>The Baldwin Locomotive Works an American builder of railroad locomotives was located in Pennsylvania originally Philadelphia then moving in 1906 to nearby Eddystone. The company was the largest US producer of custom made-to-order steam locomotives. Founded in the early 1830s by Matthais Baldwin the firm stopped producing locomotives in 1956 ceasing business in 1972 having produced over 70000 engines the vast majority powered by steam. This one of the firm's first photograhically illustrated catalogues a lavish production issued in the ealy 1870s as Baldwin overtook Rogers as the premier locomotive manufacturer in the United States. Herein will be found photographs of their divers products including fill in with some names of locomotives. While not a particularly rare catalogue it's importance & desirablility lies in documenting the ascent to prominence of this significant US heavy equipment manufacturer as well as being an early trade catalogue illustrated with actual photographs. 1807WRCAM56123Great Britain 1807. Manuscript written in eight columns on rectos and versos of two quarto sheets. Old folds two smalls spots of light soiling. Accompanied by four leaf typed transcription. Very good. An interesting but unattributed and apparently unpublished manuscript essay with a caption title reading "Loose Memo. Respectg. American Commerce." The gist of the memo is set forth in the first sentence: "The Americans are at all times the best customers of G.B. - in peace they take 1/3 of her manufactured exports - in War much more." In addition to the eager American market for British goods the author notes that British goods are often trans-shipped via America to other markets where Great Britain would not normally have access thanks to America's neutral status: ".you have only to change the name of the manufacturer & the wants of the Colonists will shut their eyes on the origin of the fabric. I have known Liverpool ware ornamented with the Portrait of Geo. III passed as German manufactures." <br> <br> The author notes that while the understandable economic downturn during the Revolution and for several years after the "peace of '83" resulted in some problematic credit relations between the U.S. and the British market much has changed. "The industry & the enterprise of our countrymen aided no doubt by the enjoyment of a neutral position has enabled them to throw off their dependence on the British merchant or manufacturer. They now have a sufficient capital of their own and a very important proportion of their imports are now paid for in ready money or in bills at short sight." The author explains that American merchants are able to export their surpluses of their own production and surplus British goods to the Continental market and transfer that money directly to creditors in Great Britain with an added perk: "The result of this species of trade must be ruinous to France. She is drained of her wealth to enrich & invigorate her enemy." <br> <br> Finally the author provides a specific example of this favored trading relationship with regard cotton. At this time the author estimates that Great Britain imports three- fifths of all cotton from the United States - some 150000 bags of cotton annually weighing 250lbs. each. The U.S. buys back nearly one-third of all cotton goods manufactured in Great Britain yielding a net profit of over £2.5 million to Great Britain. The author adds that this ratio holds for almost all raw materials produced in the United States. <br> <br> This essay was almost certainly written during the earlier part of the Napoleonic Wars; the author cites an 1801 speech by Lord Grenville which helps narrow the date range and it seems unlikely the Embargo Act of 1807 had been passed yet. Regardless the essay promotes Anglo-American trade and cooperation at least insofar as it enriches Britain and cripples France at a time when other forces were driving the two countries toward war. unknown books

With this REGLAMENTO. the Crown terminated Cadiz and Seville's monopoly of trade with Spanish America allowing other cities of the realm to participate. In addition to much information on commerce and numerous tariffs on a large variety of Spanish and American goods several sections discuss shipping ports and other maritime activities directly related to commercial activity. First enlarged edition of an illustrated merchant's guide to the duties and tariffs levied by the Spanish crown on exports from the Americas chiefly gold and silver but also concerning timber textiles furs coffee spices and foodstuffs.After first offering a general overview of Spanish colonial commerce with Western Europe Garcia de Prado provides a wide range of practical instructions for traders negotiating the hazardous waters of colonial finance giving sample calculations for the volume of shipping containers converting currency and-crucially-providing a comprehensive alphabetical list of the royal tariffs on exports from America and the West Indies printed as a table for quick reference in terms of maravedis de plata silver coins of account and quintales approx. 46 kg. The second half of the work is concerned with trade in gold and silver explaining the six classes of government tariffs and their application to quintales of the metals in their various states acuñada labrada grana fina etc. Printed at the Royal Navy Office in Cadiz where Spanish shipping vessels would have arrived from the Americas the present work anticipates later efforts by the Spanish Bourbons-particularly Charles III and the Marquis de Esquilache-to reform the fiscal administration of its colonial properties. Garcia de Prado remarks in his introduction that a much smaller work un Quaderno with the same title was printed in 1745 and that the present work aims to augment and update the information contained therein. New endpapers though half title and rear free endpaper retained. A Fine exceedingly fresh copy. Pelletan served as the director of the Compagnie de Sénégal the administrative company for the colony in 1787 and 1788 though the present work was composed from memory while Pelletan was imprisoned in 1793 at the height of La Terreur. The "Mémoire" provides geographical descriptions of the western coast of the African continent as well as an account of imports and exports the latter chiefly rubber and slaves Pelletan mentions 1000 to 1200 perhaps for the years under his administration prior to the suppression of the slave trade. The second half of the work deals primarily in describing the ravages of the slave trade on the country and it people: "It is without a doubt that the abolition of the slave trade will completely change the face of the region devastated for centuries by ceaseless warfare crippled by the enslavement of portions of its peoples and depopulated by this horrific commerce conducted by degraded persons and greedy European merchants who can only satisfy their avarice at the price of the blood and freedom of these miserable Africans" our translation; pp. 48-9. Pelletan also dedicates brief sections to the moral and physical attributes of the Senegalese inhabitants as well as a description of their homes and pottery before proposing a detailed outline for a newm post-slave trade colonial government for the region. Four different examples of this publication from Rowland Ward two with the title above one from 1904 with the caption title "Stuffed Animals: Museum Specimens All Mounted in Standing Positions" and one from 1912 with the caption title "Price List of Mounted Specimens for Museums". 4to. The lists vary from three to ten pages rectos only two include a full page illustration of a stuffed elephant one torn three include a Rowland Ward decorated cover sheet. Animals from Africa predominate but there are also specimens from India Asia Europe North and South America and Australia; prices seem to top out at $500 for an African elephant typically an entry would include common name of the animal its genus and species its sex country of origin and price. Apparently none of these lists are located on OCLC. Folded for mailing one with a receipt stamp two with ink docketing. Very good lot of scarce Rowland Ward ephemera. Included are a large number of cards issued by local businesses as well as more national concerns like a fine series of six advertising cards for 'Wright's Indian Vegetable Pills" featuring toddlers playing baseball "Tum on ets' p'ay ball"; "See me tech it!"; "Aint dot out!"; "I'se bo'en home"; "I'se dot it!". There are also 33 'Arm & Hammer' bird cards after designs by John James Audubon 13 from the Arm & Hammer Brand / Church & Co. Indices of cocktails and drinks and of hardware products. Printed in black red and yellowish brown throughout. ~ Evident FIRST EDITION. A dual-purpose trade catalogue and cocktail recipe book issued by Cleveland Faucet Company makers of bar fixtures hardware and equipment. Seventy cocktail recipes plus additional recipes for tinctures colorings essences and syrups and prepared cocktails for bottling and fruit wines and brandy. In 1883 three Ohio natives Messrs. Collins Weatherhead and Mayer founded Cleveland Faucet Company a brass foundry specialized in a combination pump and faucet. Their "specialties are absolutely unrivaled for utility quality and adaptability to the purposes required of them and have no superiors." Leading Manufacturers and Merchants of the City of Cleveland and Environs. Akron 1886 page 172. Their first trade catalogue was issued in 1885 and a 48-page combined trade catalogue/drinks manual was published in 1897 titled Catalogue B was reissued in 1899 now under the title Catalogue B and Bartender's Guide. Following the 1902 publication of Mixed Drinks the company offered a number of smaller 24 page catalogues with recipes titled Fancy Drinks or Fancy Drinks and Latest Toasts. Not only is Mixed Drinks the most ambitious of these catalogues with nearly twice as many recipes but it is also the most fanciful with illustrations of gnome-like characters throughout the text and on the five-color decorated wrappers. The wrapper cover illustration is positively psychedelic depicting four gnomes in a wooded glen enjoying beer being poured from a pump and is initialed in the print "H. C.". The more traditional rear panel of the wrapper contains images of three of the manufacturer's plants one each for a Carbonic Gas Plant the Pump and Brass Department and the Woodworking Department. But even these are framed in a decorative Art Nouveau botanical motif. Some soiling and spotting throughout; a few leaves creased which appears to have been a printer's error. Light soil to the wrappers; corners bumped. Includes a cancel leaf with information about 1903 prices. Rare. Including the Erie Can Company's there are four general catalogues that cover a broad range of products; three catalogues are specific to syrup cans; and the remainder feature one specific type of product or another. ~ Incorporated in 1901 the American Can Company was a member of the "Tin Can Trust" that controlled a large percentage of the tin market. M.; Tuesday February 18 1873 - 4:35 P. M.; Wednesday February 19 1873 - 7:35 A. M.; Wednesday February 19 1873 - 4:35 P. M.; Wednesday February 19 1873 - 11 P. A scarce collection of maps their publication began in January of 1871 with no less than 3 maps being published every day. Samuel Morse's invention of the telegraph had made it possible to easily observe gather and transmit data from different points over the entire country. A small note at the head read: "All observations made at the same moment of actual not local time." Released by the US Army's Signal Service the maps were intented to be primarily used by farmers and merchants. They were published in at least three different sizes and formats the current being one of the smaller ones. These particular maps showed precipitation and wind velocity at various elevation points. Herein Vergennes and the Conde d'Aranda further define commercial arrangements between the two countries in an attempt to control contraband. This had special impact for the Caribbean basin where the colonies of both powers were required to ship goods through European ports. Before the 18th century visitors making social calls left handwritten notes at the home of friends who were not at home. By the 1760s the upper classes in France and Italy were leaving printed visiting cards decorated with images on one side and a blank space for hand-writing a note on the other. The style quickly spread across Europe and to the United States. As printing technology improved elaborate color designs became increasingly popular. However by the late 1800s simpler styles became more common. <br /> <br />By the 19th century men and women needed personalized calling or visiting cards to maintain their social status or to move up in society. These small cards about the size of a modern-day business card usually featured the name of the owner and sometimes an address. Calling cards were left at homes sent to individuals or exchanged in person for various social purposes." <br /> <br />This an uncommon sample book of these "visiting cards" from which we can see that the firm made good use of the chromolithographic art. hardcover books

The rare Parliamentary printing of a bill relating to American trade under consideration by the house of Commons. In 1660 during the reign of Charles II Parliament passed a bill "for the encouraging and encreasing of Shipping and Navigation" which granted bonding for ships and vessels transporting goods from British plantations in Africa Asia and America directly to another British plantation or to a port in England Ireland or Wales. Three years later Ireland was struck from the list. The present law passed during the American Revolution restores Ireland's bonds privileges allowing her ports to accept goods directly from the colonies in the Americas now mostly limited to Canada and the West Indies Asia and Africa. 1801WRCAM44263Dieppe France 1801. 1p. printed circular letter on a folded folio sheet the blank fourth page addressed in manuscript and postmarked at Boston Oct. 23 1801 and with a "Ship" cancel. Docketed on the fourth page as well. Old folds some edge wear small tears at edges of fold fourth page torn from wax seal. Very good overall. An interesting and rare artifact of the attempt to rebuild French-American trading relations in the wake of the so-called "Quasi- War" between the two nations. The Quasi-War was an undeclared conflict between the United States and France during John Adams' administration in the late 1790s manifested mostly in naval engagements between the two nations. The war wreaked havoc on American commerce with France which only began to be rebuilt with the Convention of 1800. The present printed circular was created by "Le Baron fils" the former American consular agent in Dieppe and was apparently sent to a variety of American merchants encouraging them to once again send shipments of American goods to that French port. <br> <br> Not much is known of Le Baron fils though he did correspond with Benjamin Franklin and he served as the American consular agent at Dieppe for several years. This copy of Le Baron fils' circular was sent to prominent New York merchant and politician Nicholas Low and is dated in manuscript July "24." It is addressed to Low in manuscript on the fourth page and his name is also written in the upper left corner of the circular. In the printed text Le Baron fils states: "you may see by the inclosed Price Current of our Colonial & American goods not present here that our prices are more advantageous than in Bordeaux as we are more in the center of the Republick nearer to Paris Rouen Amiens and all the Chiefest manufacturing towns of France." Low is encouraged to "consign me some goods the sale of which shall be attended to with the greatest care and the proceeds of which will be sent to you either in goods from this country or in Bills on Paris London or Hamburgh at your choice." The printed text concludes by giving the names of the American consuls at Paris and Hamburg as well as two English trading houses as references to Le Baron fils' character. Le Baron fils adds in manuscript: "Mr. J. Clason & Mr. C. Codwise of yr place can give you an account upon my house in case you want quick information." unknown books
