22684Philadelphia: Printed by John Richards No. 130 North Third Street. 1839. The full title is: 'An Address to the Quarterly Monthly and Preparative Meetings and the Members thereof composing the Yearly Meeting of Friends held in Philadelphia By the Committee appointed at the late Yearly Meeting to have charge of the Subject of Slavery.' 12pp 12mo. Pamphlet in original plain brown wraps. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Begins with two pages of extracts from the minutes 17 May 1839 regarding the setting up of the committee on 'the deeply interesting subject of Slavery' with reference to 'Benjamin Price Jr. Clerk' and 'Deborah F. Wharton Clerk.' The address itself 'Signed by direction and on behalf of the Committee by John Jackson Clerk' is eight pages long. Towards the beginning it notes that 'Many of our forefathers were slave-holders and the unrighteous practice of holding our fellow-creatures in bondage was not then forbidden by our discipline.' The change of policy is described with reference to 'Anthony Benezet and John Woolman'. Later the address notes: 'The advancement of this righteous concern and the increase of light upon the subject of human rights are causing this system of iniquity to totter to its base. Hence under the influence of fearful excitement many are putting forth their strength to impede the progress of principles which if ultimately triumphant will break the fetters of the slave. A part of the trading interests at the North is evidently involved with those of the South and an influence is in this way exerted against the onward course of Emancipation; thus light and darkness antagonize each other.' And later still: 'Within a few years great events hae occurred in relation to Slavery and much light has been spread on the subject. The experience derived from Emancipation in the British West Indies has opened a new era. . while we have painful evidence that a great body of slave-holders are influenced by injustice and cruelty . There are many whose consciences are burdened by a system which they derived from their ancestors . the money of the slave-trader is temptingly held up before them; . they cannot separate the tender ties of family connexion among their slaves; they dare not receive the price of blood. . We believe they are fervently desiring the deliverance of master and slave from the bondage to which both are subjected. Their hearts have bounded with joy at the success of Emancipation in the British West Indies; it has opened a door of hope thaty they also may be legally permitted to prove the advantage of requited labour over that which is extorted by the lash of the oppressor. .'. The entries on OCLC WorldCat are not clear but the item is uncommon. Philadelphia: Printed by John Richards, No. 130 North Third Street. 1839. paperback

200429171New York:: Carroll & Graf 2004. First Printing of the First US Edition. A fine tight copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. This history of the antiquarian booksellers of New York unfolds just south of 14th Street in Manhattan mostly on the seven blocks of Fourth Avenue bracketed by Union Square and Astor Place. There for nearly eight decades from the 1890s to the 1960s thrived a bibliophiles' paradise. They called it the New York Booksellers' Row or more commonly Book Row. It's an American story the story that this richly anecdotal historical memoir amiably tells: as American as the rags-to-riches tale of the Strand which began its life as book stall on Eighth Street and today houses 2.5 million volumes in twelve miles of space. It's a story cast with colorful characters: like the horse-betting poker-playing go-getter and book dealer George D. Smith; the irascible Russian-born book hunter Peter Stammer the visionary Theodore C. Schulte; Lou Cohen founder of the still-surviving Argosy Book Store; gentleman bookseller George Rubinowitz and his legendary shrewd wife Jenny. Rising rents street crime urban redevelopment television-the reasons are many for the demise of Book Row but in this volume based on interviews with dozens upon dozens of the book people who bought sold and collected there it lives again. Following the French conquest 1781 and definitive cession Treaty of Paris 1783 the treaty guaranteed the inhabitants’ property rights under English law. Nevertheless in 1786 the Conseil du Roi created a special commission at Tobago to investigate alleged usury and excessive interest rates in these mortgage contracts. The commission—presided by the governor and ordonnateur—confiscated titles annulled or reduced debts and declared most English claims void provoking losses estimated at over 13 million livres.

This Rapport examines the legality of the tribunal under both French and English law concluding that it was arbitrary unconstitutional and in violation of the 1783 peace treaty. The committees show that English statutes were misquoted that the island’s existing courts Common Pleas and Chancery already had proper jurisdiction and that no disputes existed before the commission was imposed. The report also denounces the suppression of trial by jury and the disregard of due process. It recommends—and the Assembly accepted—that the entire commission and its judgments be annulled thereby restoring lawful jurisdiction in the colony. The episode marked one of the last acts of French administration on Tobago which was recaptured by Britain in April 1793 returned to France in 1802 under the Treaty of Amiens and formally surrendered under the Treaty of Paris in 1814.

An important Revolutionary document reflecting early attempts to reconcile French constitutional principles with colonial administration and international treaty obligations.

Not in Sabin. 18803068
Ath Belgium: L.&H. Cambier Frères n.d. ca. 1880 .

Rare profusely illustrated trade catalogue from the late 19th century depicting furniture made by L.&H. Cambier Frères of Ath Belgium.

The catalogue consists of 107 lithographed plates depicting a wide variety of chairs sofas tables desks beds and more including children's furniture. Plates 108-122 contain decorative borders but no other illustrations presumably so items could be added when Cambier Frères introduced new furniture designs.

Apparently it was fine to add items to the catalogue but buyers were advised not to cut out the drawings. "Ne découpez pas les dessins indiquez-nous simplement le numéro de l'objet" it says at the bottom of each plate.

Plates 31-33 depict chairs very similar in style to those designed by the German-Austrian cabinet maker Michael Thonet. In fact chair No. 14 on plate 31 is exactly the same as Thonet's iconic No. 14 bistro chair.

There's no date given for the catalogue but we estimate ca. 1880 based on the style of furniture. That's also when the brothers Léon and Henri Cambier expanded the Ath factory that their father Emmanuel had founded in 1835.

This catalogue is rare with OCLC showing a single institutional holding at the University of Leeds. None in commerce.

A wonderful look at European furniture of the late 19th century with numerous detailed illustrations by Breger & Javal Paris. The final page contains information which indicates that this was an exhibit in an action brought by Grant Richards against the distinguished bookseller Bertram Dobell and this document is accompanied by a manuscript 2pp. fol. folded prob. secretarial hand "draft Affidavit of Defendant Dobell". The case is Grant Richards plaintiff and Bertram Dobell and Alexander Moring defendants. Dobell initially gives details of his business two premises "Publisher Bookseller and Dealer in Autographs" length of career etc. He says he bought some letters in good faith from his co-defendent Alexander Moring who himself had bought the letters along with the rest of Grant Richards' business. He did not think that the letters had content which would provoke legal action and he has sent 3000 catalogues out in GB and the USA attracting "considerable expense" and perhaps the expense and trouble of getting sold letters back from customers if the Court so decided. His reputation is also an issue. Note: Grant Richards originated the World Classics series but it appears that Moring bought the copyright before Frowde of the OUP. The letters discussed above are apparently now in Princeton University Library. 7 October 1905. hardcover
