An early printing of this work dated 1899 from the same copy held at the National Trust Libraries on Jisc. With a publisher's slip bound in with the volume stating 'This edition of the International Code of Signals will come into use on 1st January 1901 .' A revised edition of the of the original 1857 International Signal Book which at the time failed to meet the requirements of the Mercantile Marine. This volume comprises a more updated copy of the international system of signals and codes for use by vessels to communicate important messages concerning the safety of navigation and related matters. Structured in two parts: Part I with instructions on how to signal including how to make alphabetical spelling signals and numeral signals and Part II on distant signals including the fixed semaphore for coast use. Illustrated with twelve full page coloured plates of flags as well as numerous other illustrations in text. With numerous leaves of advertisements. In the original publisher's quarter morocco binding over cloth covered boards. Externally rather worn with some shelf wear and chipping to the extremities of the boards rubbing to the spine and boards with some minor losses to the cloth of the boards and a touch of edge wear. General light soiling to the boards and spine. Internally firmly bound. The pages are clean with a touch of age toning to the protruding title indexes as usual and to the first and last few leaves.
