Second printing of this informative work gathered from the author’s first-hand interviews with early settlers and mountain men of the Pacific Northwest including Joe Meek William Henry Gray and others. Much of the work was actually written in the house of noted Oregon pioneer & author Belle W. Cooke who describes how she was “often reading the manuscript to my father and mother for comment.†Victor herself notes after publication that some of the historical facts regarding Marcus Whitman his efforts in the Oregon Country and the massacre orally related to her by Gray needed to have been checked more carefully. Victor d. 1902 was the primary author for the Bancroft histories of Oregon Washington and the Northwest Coast as well as a noted author of poetry and literature. The lower two-thirds of the broadside advertises the company's suits with W.H.H. Murray testimonial quoted tents and decoys. Moderate soiling several tiny splits at folds a good copy. Saddle-stapled as issued; rusted staples no longer present resulting in minor stains and trifling loss; some marks and light stains throughout but generally inoffensive; a decent copy. The recto of each leaf is ink-stamped 'J. Mullins. Manufacturer & Importer of Bicycles 84 Pirie St Adelaide. Branch at Commercial Road Port Adelaide'. Retail prices for all but the tandem models are added in ink: they range from just over £20 to £32. To put these figures into perspective on Saturday 19 February 1898 'The Advertiser' classifieds offered for sale a four-room cottage 'with paved yard shed &c.' in Adelaide itself for £200 and a house with 'five rooms verandahs &c.' in inner-suburban Stepney for £300. The Morgan brothers' parents emigrated from Wales in 1842 first settling in Pittsburgh before arriving in Cleveland in 1854. Located originally on Superior Street the W. J. Morgan & Company produced broadsheets trade cards pamphlets blotters postcards and posters to advertise local businesses. An early printing of this work dated 1899 from the same copy held at the National Trust Libraries on Jisc. With a publisher's slip bound in with the volume stating 'This edition of the International Code of Signals will come into use on 1st January 1901 .' A revised edition of the of the original 1857 International Signal Book which at the time failed to meet the requirements of the Mercantile Marine. This volume comprises a more updated copy of the international system of signals and codes for use by vessels to communicate important messages concerning the safety of navigation and related matters. Structured in two parts: Part I with instructions on how to signal including how to make alphabetical spelling signals and numeral signals and Part II on distant signals including the fixed semaphore for coast use. Illustrated with twelve full page coloured plates of flags as well as numerous other illustrations in text. With numerous leaves of advertisements. In the original publisher's quarter morocco binding over cloth covered boards. Externally rather worn with some shelf wear and chipping to the extremities of the boards rubbing to the spine and boards with some minor losses to the cloth of the boards and a touch of edge wear. General light soiling to the boards and spine. Internally firmly bound. The pages are clean with a touch of age toning to the protruding title indexes as usual and to the first and last few leaves. De La Vergne organized the De La Vergne Refrigeration Machine Co. The original intent was to manufacture refrigeration machines for breweries. His first machine had a 70-ton refrigeration capacity for Burr & Son Co. brewery in New York City. Soon the company was providing refrigeration for most of America’s best known breweries as well as some overseas. By the 1890s De La Vergne refrigeration was used by hotels restaurants dairies creameries chocolate manufacturers steamships and many more businesses.After De La Vergne died in 1892 the business was taken over by Jacob Ruppert who was interested in oil engines to meet the demand to power ice-making machines. “The result†said the 1936 issue of the Baldwin-Southwark Magazine “was the first commercially successful oil engine in the world.†In 1903 De La Vergne Refrigeration manufactured a 125 HP dual flywheel oil engine for display at the 1904 World’s Fair in St.Louis.
