17852954The Hague: Isaac Scheltus 1785. Very Good. Broadside. Text in two columns. Large woodcut of coat of arms of the Dutch Republic along with the arms of all member states woodcut initial also with modified Dutch Republic arms. Crease down the vertical and horizontal middle other small creases in the lower half ink offsetting from folding on lower half small tears and chips along edges small dark stain just above top woodcut. The origins of the Dutch Naval College.

Fascinating broadside detailing tax duties on ships trading in the East and West Indies America the Cape of Good Hope and elsewhere levied for - and applied towards - the newly founded Dutch Royal Naval College "Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart" or Seminary for Navigation which produced officers for the Dutch Sea Service. Notably these officers were not trained at sea but in the classroom -- and in the courtyard where the navy erected large model training ship for the ultimate experiential learning. The vessel was large enough for young students to climb the rigging. It is with good reason that graduates were described as "paper sailors."

According to this broadside the Dutch Republic approved and consented to the establishment and maintenance of the Kweekschool in the year 1781 for which the bespoke taxes were collected. The academy was officially opened in 1785 the same year that this "Publicatie" was printed. Taxes were only levied on ships of the East Indies Oostindien and the Cape of Good Hope Kaap.

It was with some urgency that the Kweekschool was developed: at this time there was a radical shift in the balance of maritime power: the power of the Dutch East India Company was in gradual decline in deference to the rising British East India Company which came to dominate global trade. In particular 1785 marks the first full year following the end of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War which broke out over British and Dutch disagreements on the legality and conduct of Dutch trade with Britain's enemies during the War of American Independence.

The broadside is signed in print by Caspar Clotterbooke 1711-1791 who was Secretary of the States of Holland at the time.

OCLC shows no copy in any institution outside of the Netherlands. Our copy appears to be the only one on the market; it is probable that this is the only one in private hands.

Literature: See especially Margaret E. 19203344
A fine copy of a rare trade catalogue issued by the Trenton Potteries Company. Decorative wrappers bound in dos-a-dos style tied with two silk twists one olive green one ochre. "Bathrooms of Character" has 40 pages beautifully illustrated with plans for creating a stylish bathroom. The cover design features a background in olive green squares outlined in white suggesting tiles with title letters in a raised white Arts and Crafts font. Embellishments of "tiles" with soft ochre stylized irises and foliage complete the handsome composition. The pamplet's counterpart "Porcelain Fixtures For Kitchen and Laundry" has 31 pages also nicely illustrated. Its cover design is identical to that of the bathroom pamphlet reversing the use of colors with ochre squares outlined in white and the iris designs executed in olive green. The text presents a wide array of superior qualities of the products including "Your Maid Will Find Cleaning Easy". It attests to shared contemporary frustrations "Every woman has had experience with the "servant problem". Dimensions and prices are included. This is the sixth edition of a booklet that was updated beginning circa 1914. Advertisements for the brochures were carried by some of the most prestigious periodicals of the day including House Beautiful Country Life and The Fra. Very scarce indeed particularly in fine condition and retaining the original postal envelope addressed in this case to "Gladys Drinkwater 1124 St. Vincent Street Utica N.Y." The envelope has a pencil date of 10/21/21 as well as the original three cent purple George Washington stamp canceled.
Trenton Pottery Co. paperback books
20775Philadelphia: Thayer Merriam & Co. Undated ca. 1889. Publisher's broadsheet prospectus 9.5 x 12 inches for "Barnum's Own Book" apparently one of many editions of The Life of Barnum the World-Renowned Showman which came out under several different imprints in 1890. Printed on very thin paper it has old tape reinforcements to closed tears at two edges and there are old folding creases. Still a very good example. Thayer Merriam & Co. appears to have operated only from 1881 to 1892 during which time they put out about 25 books likely all sold by subscription. This prospectus touts the widespread appeal of Barnum's story on one side and on the other solicits sales agents -- because "everybody wants this captivating story of the great showman". Potential agents are advised to make sure they don't have a canvassing book for any "bogus Life of Barnum" of which we are told there are many and should they have one to send it to Thayer Merriam along with 35 cents. In exchange they will receive a Thayer Merriam "canvassing-book and outfit" for "the only genuine life of Barnum written by himself." It is not clear if a Thayer Merriam edition was ever actually published--though the salesman's sample was two copies have appeared at auction. Only one holding is recorded in OCLC--at Tufts but the Tufts catalogue which includes several editions of this book does not actually list one from this publisher. Either way this broadsheet is an excellent artifact of the American book trade in the late 19th century. Thayer, Merriam & Co unknown books

Illustrated with wood engraved frontis depicting the 'Baldwin Locomotive Works' factory 11 intratextual cuts & 16 pasted-in photographs of divers Baldwin locomotives. 4to: 11" x 7-5/8"

The Baldwin Locomotive Works an American builder of railroad locomotives was located in Pennsylvania originally Philadelphia then moving in 1906 to nearby Eddystone. The company was the largest US producer of custom made-to-order steam locomotives. Founded in the early 1830s by Matthais Baldwin the firm stopped producing locomotives in 1956 ceasing business in 1972 having produced over 70000 engines the vast majority powered by steam. This one of the firm's first photograhically illustrated catalogues a lavish production issued in the ealy 1870s as Baldwin overtook Rogers as the premier locomotive manufacturer in the United States. Herein will be found photographs of their divers products including fill in with some names of locomotives. While not a particularly rare catalogue it's importance & desirablility lies in documenting the ascent to prominence of this significant US heavy equipment manufacturer as well as being an early trade catalogue illustrated with actual photographs. 185419994Chester England Oct. 17 1854. Stampless cover unlined blue folio 9.8 x 7.88 inches 3 pages plus integral address. Approx. 600 words. Clear ink stamps for Chester and Liverpool.

"I have a little piece of poetry by me which you have not had and so I will send it. I do not know if you will like it but it is a favourite with some of my little friends and I thought it might do for the Child's Paper. It is of course my own."

On securing the American evangelical ammunition needed for winning the hearts and souls of pious children in England. Knill the daughter of an English evangelical missionary to Jamaica India and St. Petersburg Russia who had settled later in life as a nonconformist preacher in Chester here writes to Russell S. Cook of the American Tract Society to request more children's publications and to alert him that she will submit a poem for publication in the Child's Paper.

Though the Tract Society is not mentioned by name the letter is directed to Cook at the 150 Nassau St. address where the society had its headquarters from 1847 to 1858; see the AAS 19th Century American Children's Book Trade Directory.

Knill's request for publications carries a hint of perhaps teasing impatience noting

"I have never had any additional 'Child's Papers' and my friends are continuously inquiring for them. What shall I tell them That they need not expect any for you will not send them Then I want some other things from your side of the World if you would be so kind as to see that that they come. I want four copies of 'Songs for the little ones at Home' and one of those little books of hymns and tunes like that you had with you here out of which we all sang together the night before you sailed. Do you remember . . . Please make them all up into a big parcel and send them straight to me here as those Edinburgh people charge double carriage. Here is the list lest you should forget. 8 additional copies of the Child's Paper for each month in this year. 4 -- -- 'Song for the little ones at home.' 1 -- -- 'Hymn Book' "

Knill sends news of a week of revivals promises more information on the old Providence House landmark in Chester and offers to settle her accounts as needed. Knill seems likely the author responsible for the anonymous short pieces datelined Chester Eng. in the early issues of Child's Paper as well as at least one piece published under the name "Mary Isabella" from Chester. Records suggest Knill appears was born March 28 1835 and baptised in November of that year baptism records that year have her name misspelled Knell; by the 1861 census she is listed as married to the noncomforming minister Charles Chapman.

Outside panels sunned and somewhat stained; a little loss to one edge from the original seal present; in very good condition quite legible. With a preliminary transcript. books
