Very Good Georgian Original bdg. HC. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Georgian. 188, [1] p. [Description of Mingrelia]. Samegrelos aghnera. Father Archangel Lambert, Neapolitan monk, who travelled through Mingrelia in the 17th century, was told that a warlike and ruthless nation, amongst whom were several female warriors, dwelt somewhere in the neighbourhood of the Caucasus. They were often at war with the Calmuc Tatars and various tribes living near them. Travel memoirs on Migrelian lands in Georgia.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original Ottoman illustrated journal. 40x27 cm. In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 8 p., richly ills. Taken from a volume. Foxing on pages, slightly chipped on hinges. Overall a very good copy. Extremely rare early issue of an Ottoman illustrated journal depicting a lynching of colored American citizens in Florida by white Americans, published one year after the proclamation of the Republic in Turkey. The first studies bearing social criticism on issues like slavery and abolition were made in the early years of the young Turkish Republic, which had refused the legacy of its imperial predecessor. In this period, several classics of American anti-slavery literature and contemporary works were translated for the first time, and texts on slavery and abolition in America were translated and published in Turkey. The term "Lynch's Law" apparently originated during the American Revolution when Patriot Charles Lynch (1736-1796), a Virginia justice of the peace, ordered extralegal punishment of the Loyalists. Variations of the term, such as "lynch law," "judge lynch," and "lynching", were standard entries in American and British English dictionaries by the 1850s. In 1811, a man named Captain William Lynch claimed that the phrase, already famous, actually came from a 1780 compact signed between him and his neighbors in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to uphold their own brand of law independent of legal authority. In the pre-Civil War South, members of the abolitionist movement and other people opposing slavery were sometimes targets of lynch mob violence. (Source: Wikipedia).

First and only Turkish edition with bilingual title and foreword with English (pp. I-XVI), of this rare book published after the first description of the Black Sea fishes has been performed by Pallas in 1811, containing the most complete information about the species composition of fishes in the Black Sea is given by Slastenenko (1955-1956), who listed 237 species, with characteristic features species, its distribution, biology, ecology, taxonomy, commercial and nutritional significance, conservation status with attractive plates. "This is the book of knowledge acquired through research carried on since three-quarters of a century in the neighboring countries bordering the Black Sea." (From the Preface by Ekrem Barlas). "This manuscript gives for the first time, a general summary of the marine and freshwater fishes in the Black Sea Basin. In the last century, a series of documents on the fauna of the Aral-Pontic, Caspian Basin has been published by K. Kessler and other authors. But, Since then, several investigations on the fauna of fishes of the Black Sea Basin made by individuals and expeditions revealed the existence of entirely different conditions. Therefore some deceased species have been described. Furthermore, as a result of the migration of the Mediterranean fauna into the Black Sea, the lists have become richer with the addition of many species which were unknown earlier. This book consists of two sections: 1. Special section which deals with the study of the composition of the fish fauna, and its systematic and biological characteristics. 2. The section consists of a summary of the historical study of the Black Sea fauna, its genesis, and a short hydrological and geological history of the sea. In the special section, 237 species and subspecies have been described. These belong to 20 groups, 56 families, and 122 genera. (Jaar: 2011 - Europeana Collections). French edition of Kiepert's huge map of the Imperial Ottoman territories. "Includes list of geographic terms in eastern languages and notes on administrative divisions. Includes notes on materials the cartographer used to put together the map". (See LC copy). Kiepert, (1818-1899), was born in Berlin. He traveled frequently as a youth with his family and documented his travels by drawing. His family was friends with Leopold von Ranke, who inspired Kiepert's creative endeavors. Kiepert was taught by August Meineke in school. Meineke influenced Kiepert's interest in classical antiquity. He attended Humboldt University of Berlin. He studied history, philology, and geography. He published his first geographical work, with Carl Ritter, in 1840, titled Atlas von Hellas und den hellenischen Kolonien. The atlas focused on ancient Greece. In 1848 his Historisch-geographischer Atlas der alten Welt was published. In 1854, his atlas, Atlas antiquus was released. It was translated into five languages. Neuer Handatlas über alle Teile der Erde was first published in 1855. In 1877 his Lehrbuch der alten Geographie was published, and in 1879 Leitfaden der alten Geographie, which was translated into English (A Manual of Ancient Geography, 1881) and into French. In 1894 he created the first part of a larger atlas of the ancient world titled Formae orbis antiqui. He traveled to Asia Minor four times between 1841 and 1848. He created two maps of the region, including Karte des osmanischen Reiches in Asien, in 1844. Kiepert taught geography at the University of Humboldt-Berlin starting in 1854.
