Secondo il suo stile ormai collaudato, Galassi propone una selezione di contumelie nelle quali la ferocia dell'offesa non è mai disgiunta da un'ironia assidua e costante, iperbolica e spaccona, inverosimile e barocca, colorita e irriverente più che demolitrice, quasi a voler sorridere con l'ingiuriato per gli strabilianti prodotti di una fantasia e di una creatività le cui invenzioni, in materia, attingono sempre a quel grande teatro disordinato e a tratti surreale che è il tessuto antropologico della civitas neapolitana. Contumelie, quindi, che sono anche lazzi, sberleffi, motti buffoneschi e sguaiati, frizzi mordaci e folgoranti, sillabe scoppiettanti come petardi, innesti semantici al limite dell'assurdo: tutto ciò, e altro ancora, è l'offesa a Napoli, che anche quando appare impietosa e crudele, contiene sempre l'implicito messaggio "Ce l'ho con te ma, nel comunicartelo, mi voglio, ti voglio, divertire".

He studied under his uncle before joining the Perushim of Eisiskes for three years. He then went to Vilna and was ordained by Rabbi Isaac Elhanan Spektor and Rabbi Isaac Harif of Slonim. He was appointed the rabbi of Jieznas in 1871 but due to the financial instability of the community, he immigrated to New York in 1884. There he served as a preacher, he was known as the "Yezner Rav" and as a kashrut supervisor under the authority of Chief Rabbi Jacob Joseph for twelve years. In the introduction to this book, Rabbi Lass writes, "'Originally, [when I first came to New York, ] ...I planned to publish [from my ms. The] section of responsa [on gittin called Geresh Yerahim] because there within are many important matters of practical halakhah. However, after my wheel [of fortune] turned I was left without any support and not one penny remained in my hands. I concluded that I should [instead] publish the section on aggadah and homiletics [i. E. , Ateret Zevi]. It is my hope that this section will attract many of my brethren among the children of Israel in this land to support me and my household, and also so that I will be able to disseminate from my wellspring all my novel interpretations in halakhah, i. Un'antica spada conficcata nella roccia nel senese, misteriose macchine anatomiche esposte in una cappella napoletana, un affascinante palazzo veneziano funestato da una maledizione: molte sono le località d'Italia custodi di storie segrete che affondano le loro radici in antiche leggende o in misteri più recenti. Massimo Polidoro percorre la penisola da nord a sud e descrive questi luoghi svelandone i fenomeni in apparenza non scientifici, smontandone i miti nati dalla fantasia popolare. O forse no, almeno non del tutto, perché in queste storie si trova anche il cuore dell'uomo con i suoi meccanismi spesso imperscrutabili, destinati a sfuggirci sempre. E dove non arrivano le parole si spingono le illustrazioni di Francesco Bongiorni con le loro atmosfere suggestive ed enigmatiche.

Le sirene sono un mito senza tempo. Le abbiamo avvistate nei versi di Omero e in quelli di Rilke, ne abbiamo ascoltato il canto nelle pagine di Joyce e nella musica di Wagner, le abbiamo ritrovate nei flutti del Mediterraneo e nelle acque perigliose di oceani lontani. Occorre una mappa per non smarrirsi in una simile geografia, che rassomiglia a volte a un labirinto, e in questo Atlante Agnese Grieco ci guida con mano esperta di nocchiere alla scoperta di queste creature leggendarie, delle loro origini, delle infinite metamorfosi del loro canto. Dalle sirene che tentarono Ulisse sulla via del ritorno a Itaca a quelle che ammaliarono Henry Hudson e la sua ciurma durante il viaggio nelle gelide acque del Mar Glaciale Artico, dalle sirene che danzano fra i pentagrammi di Debussy a quelle che compaiono nel bel mezzo di Manhattan nel film «Splash», non c'è fine alle cronache, alle opere d'arte, agli aneddoti che Agnese Grieco esplora in queste pagine, di ciascuno mostrando i lati più reconditi.
