First published anonymously by Murray in 1824 this Persion tale remained quite popular throughout the 19th Century. Two volumes in Near Fine condition. Marbled paper-covered boards with spine and tips of smoth calf; titling and decorations in gilt on the spine. Clean texts; xxxii 306 pages and 352 pages. Armorial bookplates on the front paste-downs. Page ends are marbled. Tiny bit of shelf rub to the bottom edges and top stain darkened; else Fine. Really lovely little books. Later Printing. Quarter-Bound. Volumes LXXXIX and XC of Baudry's European Library 'Collection of Ancient and Modern British Authors'.In two volumes containing 'The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan' and 'The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan in England'.Two popular and entertaining novels by James Justinian Morier.The first novel here is a sort of 'Gil Blas' set in Persia followed by its sequel set in England.Morier was noted for these novels about the Iran Qajar dynasty. 'The Adventures of Hajji Baba' was later made into an American adventure film in 1954. In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally smart. Light bumping to the extremities. A few small marks to the leather. Bookseller's label to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages are a little age-toned with some spots. Near Fine Baudry's European Library hardcover

An unusual copy with seven lithographs to volume II. Seven plates to volume II which is unusual as no illustrated editions of this work have been recorded. The plates resemble the style of the author's own illustrations as he was an amateur sketch artist. These sketches suggest an amandoned intention to issue an illustrated edition of this work. Bound without the half-titles. James Justinian Morier was a renowned British diplomat and author who entered the diplomatic service through the influence of his uncle Admiral William Waldegrave1st Baron Radstock. First visiting Iran in 1808 as secretary to Sir Harford Jones-Brydges Morier had an extensive career in the country and wrote several travel works of his experiences that were widely popular. This picaresque romance of Persian life was written after Morier retired from his diplomatic career in Iran. The work drew heavily on Morier's personal knowledge of Persia and its people that he had acquired on the British embassy staff at Tehran. The novel hence widely influenced English ideas of Persia and its Persian translation even led to the development of the modern Persian novel of social criticism.An unusual copy of this work in need of a sympathetic rebind. In a contemporary half calf binding. Externally worn. Loss to the backstrips of all volumes worse to volume III. Volume III is also lacking the bottom spine label. Spine is lifting to volume II. Pages 343-346 to volume II are detached but present. Good Only John Murray hardcover

Contemporary full vellum hand lettered to the spine owner's inscription "E. Howes" dated 1830 to the head of the title page occasional old manuscript marginalia the verso of the title page to the second part with a few lines of manuscript handwriting - likely 17th century a blank verso to the rear with later juvenile inscription and doodles - possibly late 17th or 18th century. Some worming to the lower margin most pronounced towards the end of the first part staining at intervals becoming more prevalent to the second half of the volume spine darkened with some marking to the boards.
