HARDCOVER bound in contemporary cloth gilt lettering to cover old shelf ticket to spine old military institutional stamps to first free endpaper and first page. In fine condition. Excellent copy exceptionally well preserved. ~ FIRST EDITION. This is the report on the famous firing tests with a 24 cm gun on metal armour construction which were made on November 9 1875. The report is dated within the text "Scheveningen 16 Juni 1879". The 24cm iron gun was a rifled breech loader based on the French gun "Modèle 1864-66" introduced from 1870 onwards to arm the positions in the Dutch cities Den Helder Willemstad Hellevoetsluis and Amsterdam. The armoured plates for the firing tests were manufactured in England each measuring 3.23x1 meter 20.32 cm thick at the bottom and 15.24 cm at the top. The 2 giant plates were fit together and the whole leaned against special armoured support. Various types of ammunition were tested and with the lack of photographic technique the damage assessments had to be drawn. The military artist who executed the drawings is to be highly commended. Not only they are extremely accurate they are finely drawn and at a letter stage reproduced in colour lithography. Of utmost rarity. Probably only 3 other copies are known all in The Netherlands.
