Stockdale a publisher and bookseller was indicted for libel on the House of Commons after publishing an account of the impeachment of Warren Hastings by John Logan that accused the Commons of corrupt and unjust behavior. Stockdale was defended by Erskine who argued that Stockdale should not be judged by isolated passages in Logan's book but by the entire publication. Stockdale was acquitted and his case is believed to have influenced the passage of the Libel Act of 1792 which restored the verdict power of juries in libel cases. Taken in shorthand by Gurney The Whole Proceedings is Stockdale's account of his trial. A Dublin reissue and a "New" London edition were also published in 1790. A cotton merchant by trade Walker was a well-connected radical and social reformer. His circle of friends and acquaintances included Thomas Paine Charles James Fox Josiah Wedgwood Joseph Priestley and John Horne Tooke. He and his friends aroused suspicion during the anti-radical hysteria in Great Britain that followed the outbreak of the French Revolution. That was the basis of the treason trial of Walker and several of his associates. The defence was conducted by Thomas Erskine. Unhappy with his treatment by Walker during a lawsuit Roberts circulated a flyer reading: "Mr. Thomas Walker commenced his virulence against me like a BULLY has conducted it like a FOOL has acted in it like a SCOUNDREL has ended it like a COWARD at last has turned BLACKGUARD and unworthy of association with or notice of any Gentleman who regards his own character." Walker won his case; Roberts paid damages of 100.
