Raccolta di memorie relative al giudizio per l'efferato omicidio della moglie dell'imputato e di una sua vicina, con seguente tentativo di incendio della casa al fine di eliminarne le tracce. Questo l'incipit del giudice relatore nel ristretto del processo: 'Avido di sangue umano il tivolese carrettiere padronale Benedetto Nobili, uomo di circa 40 anni statura piuttosto alta e di feroce aspetto, se ne reso talmente sitibondo che mai dissetato a sufficienza aumentava sempre la sua ferocia'. Nella notte del 2 settembre 1800, a causa di un alterco, Benedetto Nobili diede dodici coltellate alla moglie. Non pago, appicco' il fuoco al fieno conservato in soffitta. Caso volle che una vicina, comare dell?assassinata, si accorgesse dell'incendio e si precipitasse nell'abitazione dell'amica. Li' incontro' il Nobili che, per coprire il suo misfatto, diede alla sventurata altre 27 coltellate. All'arrivo della pattuglia chiamata dai vicini, il disgraziato disse che le due donne erano state uccise da 'due incogniti entrati in casa per rubare'. Da ultimo tento' anche la fuga, passando attraverso il giardino di un ecclesiastico a cui richiese una serie di messe per l'anima della defunta. Infine venne tratto in arresto appena in tempo perche' non fosse assalito dalla folla inferocita. Durante il processo venne rilevato che la causa dell'alterco fu la vendita di un fondo di proprieta' della moglie cosi' come fu rilevato che alcuni parenti dell'inquisito fossero morti suicidi. La stessa perizia presentata dalla difesa e diversi precedenti specifici attestarono che il Nobili fosse pazzo. Inoltre molto venne speso per provare che il delitto del Nobili non cadesse nel novero dei delitti atrocissimi e che quindi non potesse farsi uso dei tormenti se non di quelli comuni.

Interessante il fatto che gli accusati vengano tenuti piu' di due anni in attesa di giudizio e che nel frattempo una dei due muoia in carcere. La difesa, scagionando l'ostessa De Angelis e il vetturale Betturri, accusa invece altri due vetturali che nell'occasione accompagnavano la vittima.

Alexandre Jacob passato alla storia come "il ladro gentiluomo" ispirò lo scrittore francese Maurice Leblanc da cui creò il personaggio di Arsenio Lupin. Arrestato con tutta la banda nel 1903, Jacob trasformò la propria difesa in un comizio leggendario: "una parte del mondo vive nel freddo, nella fame, nel dolore. Io ho voluto vendicarla". In carcere ha scritto sulle condizioni dei detenuti, dei penitenziari e del rapporto con la società più in generale: "Se i prigionieri scappassero dalle angherie, dagli abusi di potere dei quali sono vittime presumibilmente sarebbe un progresso, ma il problema rimarrebbe comunque. Più in generale è l'intera struttura sociale che necessita di un cambiamento. All'attuale stato delle cose, io credo che la vendetta sperimentata dentro i penitenziari costituisca una delle più grandi abominazioni del nostro tempo ed io grido: abbasso le prigioni, tutte le prigioni".
