Marbled paper is rubbed/chipped at extremities. No date but circa 1880-1890. Illustrated title page. Bampfylde-Moore Carew 1693-1770 was called "King of the gipsies." "His career was a long series of swindling and imposture very ingeniously carried out He continued his course of vagabond roguery for some time was convicted of being a vagrant and sentenced to be transported to Maryland. On his arrival escaped and fell into the hands of some friendly Indians. - DNB. According to Howes C132 Carew "operated confidence games among colonial suckers from Virginia to Connecticut - the memorable first of a long line of such artists who have continued to flourish in this climate." He returned to Scotland about 1745. Also described here are his picaresque adventures among gypsies on the Continent and in London. This "Popular Edition" contains "A Vocabulary of Words used by the Scottish Gipsies" "A Few Sentences in the Gipsy Language" and "A Dictionary of the Cant Language generally used by Mendicants." This edition is not cited in Black's GYPSY BIBLIOGRAPHY but seems to be an expanded edition of Black's item 768 circa 1870. This copy has the 1898 bookplate of Roger de Coverly. Could this be the bookbinder Roger de Coverly who apprenticed with Joseph Zaehnsdorf After ten years at Leighton's Coverly formed his own bindery and did work for many important clients including William Morris. Good. <p>Abdullah writes to future congressman Seymour Halpern that he is too busy to see anyone but "I am sending by this mail the signed picture to your friend."<p>Achmed Abdullah who claimed descent from the Russian imperial family and was educated in England emigrated to the United States in the 1910s. He went on to become an American author and screenwriter most noted for his pulp stories of crime mystery and adventure. He wrote screenplays for some successful films and earned an Academy Award nomination for collaborating on the screenplay for the 1935 film "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer".<p>The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. The letter is dated February 19 1913.<br /> <br /> The author writes:<br /> <br /> "Dear Sir<br /> <br /> "Complying with your request as regards attempted Bank Burglaries in this Territory. The last one occurred about one month ago. At Tremonton the “State Bank of Tremonton†This is a small town 25 miles north of Ogden. The bank had just located a new building and was ready to move in. They were using an old plate safe. But we sold them a new Manganese. The new safe was in the vault of the new bank while the old safe remained in the old building and vault. The bank had acknowledged they would move on Monday. On Sunday night the Burglers sic entered the old Bank and blew the old safe. But the Saturday evening previous the Cashier had transferred all the money to the new safe. So the yeggmen did not secure a cent and all the damage they did was to put the old safe out of use. The only other attempts I know of in the past six months was on a bank at Midvale Ut. and Murray Ut both small town south of Salt Lake about 15 and 25 miles. In both cases all they did was to punch the lock off the vault door. There was no attempt on either safe and the yeggs got nothing.<br /> <br /> "I presume you have heard of the First National at St. Anthony being entirely burned out as also the Commercial Bank at Burley Id.<br /> <br /> "Yours very truly " A letter with interesting content describing early twentieth century attempts at breaking open safes in small Utah towns which leave the yeggmen empty handed in the end. The letter is addressed to Mr. W. G. Norris of Seattle WA. William G. Norris was president of Norris Safe & Locke Co. which was a seller of safes. In 1904 the business occupied one of the first-floor storefronts of the Estabrook building at 1336 2nd Avenue. Perhaps Mr. Norris had queried the author of the letter as to how his safes were withstanding the occasional burglaries of the times. unknown
