Rédigée à l'encre bleue sur un double feuillet de papier vergé filigrané avec entête imprimée de son adresse du 26, Avenue des Champs Élysées. Cette lettre aborde à la fois la politique, l'édition littéraire et les sciences. « Cher Monsieur, Voici les "souvenirs de route", de M. Barboux. Vous y trouverez, je crois, quelques preuves nouvelles de l'activité et de la curiosité de ce noble esprit. Je vous serai reconnaissant de vouloir bien me rendre cet opuscule, dès que vous l'aurez lu, puisque je me propose d'en dire moi-même, directement, quelques mots. J'ai vérifié que je vous avais bien envoyé mon livre signé et, en vérité, vous étiez le dernier que je puisse oublier. Que l'erreur soit imputable aux courriers de Fasquelle ou à la poste, elle n'est certainement pas mienne. Permettez-moi cependant de la réparer. L'ouvrage de Frédéric Houssay dont je vous parlais hier est intitulé Nature et Sciences naturelles (Flammarion), mais je crois me rappeler que c'est surtout dans d'intéressants articles de Le Dantec, publiés il y a deux ans par la Revue des Idées, que j'ai vu développer la thèse de l'origine marine. A few years later Fredholm's theory of integral equations enabled him to solve all these problems; it is likely that Poincareé's papers had a decisive influence on the development of Fredholm's method in particular the idea of introducing a variable complex parameter in the integral equation. It should also be mentioned that Fredholm's determinants were directly inspired by the theory of "infinite determinants" of H. von Koch which itself was a development of much earlier results of Poincaré in connection with the solution of linear differential equations."
