Original crimson full cloth over beveled boards binding. The boards and spine are decorated with gilt strap designs. Corners worn. Edward E. Salisbury (1814-1901), by permission, gathered this valuable information from the archives of the New Haven Colony Historical Society, and, after some revision, had it privately printed in April 1876. The most famous early member of the family was Giovanni Diodati or Deodati (1576-1649), a Swiss theologian and translator. He was the first person to translate the Bible into Italian from Hebrew and Greek sources. He was born at Geneva, of a noble family originally from Lucca which had been exiled on account of its Protestantism. John Milton supposedly vacationed at the Villa Diodati in 1639. In 1816 it was the summer residence of Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, John Polidori and others - and thus the first home of Frankenstein and The Vampyre. Hardbound. Very good. The plates and portraits are original mounted photos by T.F. Scudder, Huntington, Long Island, New York. Scarce private edition portfolio. Very good. Sarah Franklin "Sally" Bache (1744-1808) was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Deborah Read. She was a leader in relief work during the American Revolutionary War and frequently served as her father's political and social hostess, as her mother had died in 1774. Sarah Bache was Benjamin Franklin's daughter. Benjamin Franklin Bache (1769-1798) was an American journalist, printer and publisher. He founded the Philadelphia Aurora, a newspaper that supported Jeffersonian philosophy. He frequently attacked the Federalist political leaders, including Presidents George Washington and John Adams, and historian Gordon S. Wood wrote that "no editor did more to politicize the press in the 1790s." His paper's heated attacks are thought to have contributed to Congress's passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts. The favorite grandson of Benjamin Franklin, Bache was often referred to as "Lightning Rod Junior" after his famous grandfather's experiment. He died at 29 in the yellow-fever epidemic of 1798. We may have a few fine reproductions from portraits by St. Memin that would enhance and/or complete this collection - gratis. RARE. PA58

The book collects 503 letters, 97 by the Modenese scholar. They bring first-hand news about Muratori?s tireless work in his most active period (1704-1749), from the ?Perfetta poesia italiana? to the ?Rerum Italicarum scriptores? through the writings for Comacchio and those concerning religion. Among these correspondences the most cosiderable is that with the Florentine scholar A.F. Marmi (363 letters), one of the most important in the whole Muratori?s correspondences. 1683 gr. 588 p.
